If England lose this fixture against Andrew Balbirnie’s side, you get the feeling they will brush it off with a response something similar to, ‘How exciting was that? It’s good for cricket’.
If opener Crawley has a couple of failures at the top of the order, the pressure will surely increase on the Kent man, who has only reached or gone beyond 50 three times in his last 27 innings.
Jonny Bairstow is another who could do with a performance. His place isn’t under threat like Crawley’s is, but he is returning from a long injury lay-off and didn’t really shine with the bat in two Championship appearances and a Blast outing for Yorkshire recently. He was good behind the stumps, however.
England v Ireland Betting Tips
Unless you fancy an Ireland upset at 22/1 with bet365 amongst others, which I don’t, then there’s no value in the match result. England are 1/7 with a number of bookies, and it’s worth looking for value elsewhere.
All hail the Pope
Ollie Pope is 4/1 with Ladbrokes to score a century in the match and 9/2 with betfair to be England’s top run-scorer in the first innings of this match, both of which I really like the look of.
England’s number three has enjoyed early summer success in a Surrey shirt - he had 91 and 122 not out in one Championship game against Hampshire last month - and I reckon there are a couple of question marks surrounding rivals.
Crawley we’ve already mentioned, while market leader Joe Root isn’t exactly in rhythm having been a bit part player for the last two months with Rajasthan in the IPL.
Let’s hope for Moor runs from PJ
Ireland opener PJ Moor, the former Zimbabwe international with 11 Tests to his name - three for the Irish - is a sizeable 6/1 with Betfred to be his country’s top scorer in the first innings of this match.
Look, I don’t expect Ireland to pile on the runs, so a score of 50 or 60 could well suffice.
He has just come off the back of a warm-up match against Essex last week when he scored 37 and 118 not out. I think this is worth a small stakes approach.
Matthew to break some Potts
Seamer Matthew Potts is the joint leading wicket-taker in the County Championship so far for Durham, claiming 30 in Division Two. His former team-mate Chris Rushworth has also taken 30 Division One wickets for Warwickshire.
With Jimmy Anderson and Ollie Robinson not playing this week as they manage recent injuries, Potts will surely get a chance to shine.
And Ladbrokes have him at a juicy 8/1 to take five wickets or more in the first innings of this fixture.
