Chennai Super Kings have previously won the IPL twice in two years, Mumbai Indians have also retained a title. Now Gujarat are bidding to add their name to an exclusive list. And I think they will.
They dismantled a buoyant Mumbai side in yesterday’s Eliminator, with Indian opener Shubman Gill continuing his irresistible form with a stunning 129 - his third century in his last four matches.
This will be a clash between the top two teams from the group stages. Gujarat finished top and Chennai second. Chennai then won the Qualifier clash between the two at the start of the week to qualify directly for the final.
If CSK win this final, they will have won the IPL a record-equalling five times, sitting alongside Mumbai. But, for me, that wait will go on for MS Dhoni and company.
I would be taking the 10/11 on Gujarat to win this final.
I said at the start of the competition that I didn’t rate Chennai. Fair play, they have proved me wrong. Though, I still rate Gujarat higher, a team who I always expected to be there and thereabouts.
Gill forms deserves rewarding
You may have read this following line or similar a few times in the last fortnight.
I won’t be looking any further than success for star man Shubman Gill, who has bolted away to be the leading run-scorer in the tournament (851) with recent scores of 101, 104 not out, 42 and 129.
You can take any number of bets on his success.
Bet365 are offering a price boosted 5/2 on him to be Gujarat’s top batter in the match. I would be taking that, as I would the 7/4 Ladbrokes are offering on Gill to score a fifty in the match.
Betfair are offering 4/1 on Gujarat to win and Gill to be their top run-scorer.
And finally, if you want to be more adventurous and back him to score a fourth century in quick succession, bet365 will give you 7/1. I think that’s pretty generous considering his form. I was thinking it might be there around 6/1.
Is this the end for MS?
I’m going to throw logic out of the window to finish here, instead letting my heart rule my head.
“I have eight or nine months to decide” was the response MS Dhoni gave to the inevitable retirement question earlier this week. Will the 41-year-old wicketkeeper-batter still be around for next year’s IPL?
If Chennai were to win this one, it would be a heck of a way to bow out.
Their captain has rarely got to the crease so far in the IPL batting down at seven, with a high-score of 20 in his last 10 appearances.
But it wouldn’t surprise me to see Chennai be something like 50-5 in this match and look to him for a rescue act. With that in mind, I would be putting just a couple of quid on Dhoni to be CSK’s top run-scorer in the match at 25/1 with Ladbrokes.
Compare that to bet365, for example, who have him at 12s. That’s worth very small stakes.
