Vitality Blast QF: Lancashire Lightning v Essex Eagles Betting Tips & Preview

For almost two seasons, Lancashire have been unbeatable on home turf. That could be about to change as Essex roll into town.

Lancashire Lightning v Essex Eagles

Vitality Blast, Quarter-Final

Friday July 8, 2022, 6.30pm

Emirates Old Trafford

Lancashire are on a 14-game unbeaten streak at home dating back to the start of last season. A couple of those games have been at Blackpool, but the lion’s share at Emirates Old Trafford, where they are a mightily impressive outfit. But trouble might lie ahead.

Lancashire enjoyed a stunning start to their North Group campaign this season, winning six of their first seven. They then only won two of their last seven to finish second in the table on 18 points.

Essex, meanwhile, finished third in the South on 19 points, winning their last four group games, including posting 254-5 in beating Glamorgan at Chelmsford on Saturday - the second highest total in Blast history.

If you add in the fact that Lancashire will be missing Buttler, Gleeson, Livingstone, Parkinson and Salt due to England T20 duty and I would be very tempted by the best price 11/10 on offer with Paddy Power amongst others on an Essex win.

Should they win, it would be the second time in four years that Essex have won an away quarter-final against Lancashire having beaten them at Durham in 2019 (neutral venue due to a clash of dates with the Old Trafford Ashes Test).

Off-spinner to Harm Lancashire’s chances

So often Simon Harmer has carried Essex to glory. He was player-of-the-match in the 2019 final against Worcestershire, while he has taken bucketloads of wickets in recent Championship title successes. Big game player!

The South African international off-spinner, Essex’s captain in this format, is their leading wicket-taker in this season’s Blast with 16 wickets. Not outstanding but steady.

He is ideally suited to spin-friendly Emirates Old Trafford, and I really like the 13/8 bet365 are offering on the 33-year-old to take over 1.5 wickets in this fixture.

It would also not surprise me in the slightest if he was named player of the match, with bet365 offering a juicy 10/1.

#WhatOddsPaddy selections could bring in 5/1 shot

Regular readers of my previews will know how I like the combination bets on offer with the likes of Paddy Power and betfair. So I’m going to dive in again.

I think the 5/1 on there to be a duck, a stumping and a run out in this quarter-final tie.

Knockout cricket, pressure increased = run out. Quality spin from the likes of Simon Harmer, Tom Hartley = stumping chance. Lancashire short of batting quality = duck chance.
