Michael van Gerwen is beginning to stretch his legs at the top of the 2023 Darts Premier League table.
The “Green Machine” has won back-to-back nights in Dublin and Exeter and, despite his unlikely loss in the final of this past weekend’s UK Open, is looking the in-form player on the PDC Tour.
At the other end it’s 5/5 for Peter Wright in quarter-final losses.
“Snakebite” is still pointless at the foot of the standings despite throwing a pretty healthy average of 96 across his five matches.
Michael Smith, Nathan Aspinall and Gerwyn Price make up the rest of the top four with only half of the league registering a night win.
Let’s take a look at this week’s 20/1 Darts Acca.
Peter Wright to beat Gerwyn Price
Now, forgive us for dabbling in the gambler’s fallacy, but we’re not expecting a red to turn up six times in a row on Peter Wright’s roulette wheel.
The Scot is “due” a win in the Premier League and certainly isn’t playing bad enough to slump into a losing habit.
Wright has a 5-3 lead over Price across their last eight meetings and Liverpool could well bring out the best in “Snakebite”.
Price has lost three of his five quarter-finals this season.
Michael van Gerwen -1.5 handicap vs Jonny Clayton
We’re giving Michael van Gerwen a little bit of wiggle room in his fixture against Jonny Clayton.
Clayton is improving since a shaky start – he has reached the semi-finals and the final across the last three weeks – but can often come unstuck against a fit and firing “MVG”.
The Dutchman will be out to prove a point following his UK Open final loss to Andrew Gilding and a 1.5 leg head start for Clayton could soon be obliterated.
Chris Dobey to beat Nathan Aspinall
The Masters champion has gone 0-4 in his last four quarter-finals and is in danger of slipping to the foot of the table in his debut season if Peter Wright can out-perform him.
Nathan Aspinall is a fighter. He can turn it on against the bigger boys in the league but can see his levels slip when he is the favourite.
Dobey beat Aspinall 6-4 in the opening night and a repeat scoreline wouldn’t be a shock.
Michael Smith to throw most 180s and win match vs Dimitri van den Bergh
Michael Smith hasn’t pulled up any trees so far in the Premier League but has quietly manoeuvred himself into second spot.
For his standards he has been pretty quiet in the 60-bed this season so we’re expecting “Bully Boy” to pick up his average this week in Liverpool.
Dimitri van den Bergh lost 6-4 to Smith in week three and after disappointing at the UK Open Smith is expected to respond in Liverpool.
