We’re edging towards the serious end if the World Matchplay this summer as four more spots in the quarter-finals are determined on Wednesday night.
After Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright flexed their muscles on Tuesday, who will join them, along with Nathan Aspinall and Dimitri van den Bergh, in the last eight?
Let’s take a look at the best tips and picks for Day 5′s play in Blackpool:
Daryl Gurney v Danny Noppert (20 July, 19:00)
Match Double – Daryl Gurney match win & most 180s at 11/2 with bet365
The “peacockery” on show from Daryl Gurney in the opening round against Gary Anderson was something to behold.
The Northern Irishman has got his swagger back on the oche and will be expecting to push the in-form Danny Noppert all the way in this race to 11.
The Dutchman has never got past the second round in Blackpool and despite playing well in 2022 and seeded 11th at the championships, there is something about Gurney that opens up the value in his price.
Gurney loves finding a rhythm on his 180 hitting and if he hits the most maximums, he could well romp to victory.
Jose De Sousa v Rob Cross (20 July, 20:00)
Over 18.5 legs at 5/6 with bet365
Rob Cross turned around the impossible against Chris Dobey having trailed 8-2 in a race to 10.
This mammoth showing in the second half of their contest will do wonders for “Voltage’s” confidence, albeit knowing he can’t afford to get off to a similarly slow start against Jose De Sousa.
De Sousa is playing consistently enough without setting the oche alight and this match could boil down to “who wants it more” in the latter stages.
We think we’re in for a long-en here, with at least 19 legs thrown.
Gerwyn Price v Dave Chisnall (20 July, 21:00)
Over 11.5 180s at 1/1 with bet365
Two cult heroes on the oche, Price and Chisnall know how to get the crowd involved in a match.
As well as that, the “Iceman” and “Chizzy” are also experts at finding the “red bit” of a treble 20.
In a match that could well go down to the wire, over 11.5 180s looks like a steal at Evens.
Michael Smith v Dirk van Duijvenbode (20 July, 22:00)
Michael Smith match win at 4/5 with bet365
We’re still pretty keen on Michael Smith in the outrights for the Matchplay title at 8/1 with bet365.
“Bully Boy” has proved he can get over the line on the PDC Tour in 2022 with a win at the US Darts Masters and his number 3 ranking underlines his threat in this format.
DvD averaged an unbeaten 104 in his opening round win over Ryan Searle and won’t lie down against Smith.
Still, Smith has advanced past the second round in his last three attempts and we’re not expecting 2022 to be any different.
