We’re checking into Day 2 of the 2023 World Matchplay, as we take an early look at the world number one Michael Smith.
Bully Boy is on a winning roll across 2022-23, but has a gaping hole in his trophy cabinet awaiting the Matchplay.
We’ve also got a future star in action in Josh Rock and everyone’s favourite walk-on Nathan Aspinall.
Let’s take a look at some of the best betting for Day 2 in Blackpool:
Damon Heta vs Josh Rock – Josh Rock to win at 8/13 with bet365 (Sunday @ 15:00)
Josh Rock looks like a future world champion.
The reigning world youth champion is taking scalp after scalp on the PDC Tour and his fourth round run at the World Championship underlined his capabilities under the spotlight.
But the 22-year-old has every right to be concerned about Damon Heta – the Australian is averaging well on Tour and winning events.
But we’re backing the exuberance of youth in this clash with Rock creeping over the line in a thriller.
Nathan Aspinall vs Krzysztof Ratajski – Over 17.5 legs at 13/8 with bet365 (Sunday @ 19:30)
You never want to be drawn against Krzysztof Ratajski early in a tournament.
The Pole is the definition of a banana skin and Aspinall’s record won’t help him in a race to 10.
The Asp is a two-time quarter-finalist at the Winter Gardens but has struggled for consistency in 2023.
We reckon he will still get over the line, but will have to fight for the win over the distance.
Michael Smith vs Steve Beaton – Michael Smith Match Treble (Win, Most 180s and Highest Checkout) at 20/21 with bet365 (Sunday @ 22:00)
Steve Beaton’s longevity at the World Matchplay is quite remarkable. He debuted in 1998 and has played in all but four editions since.
But with 13 first round exits at the Winter Gardens, things don’t look great for the Bronzed Adonis against the reigning world champion.
Beaton is as consistent as they come, but struggles to up his game in order to register those big wins.
Smith is flying on all cylinders and will be looking to bag the title after reaching the quarters, semis and final over the last four years.
