Whyte and Browne end their long-standing feud in London heavyweight clash
British heavyweight Dillian Whyte (22-1, 16 KOs) will end his long-standing feud with Australian challenger Lucas Browne (25-0, 22 KOs) this weekend.
The pair will collide at the O2 Arena in London, as they look to settle a rivalry which has been threatening to boil over for some time now.
Both men are seeking to edge closer to a shot at world title honours in the near future, and prevailing this Saturday night may help their cause in the English capital.
Travelling from Down Under, Browne is aiming to prove a point and overcome Whyte in front of the London crowd. With the WBC Silver heavyweight belt also up for grabs, he is a 9/4 outsider with Paddy Power to triumph here.
Meanwhile, Whyte is in search of a seventh straight victory since his maiden defeat to Britain’s current unified world champion Anthony Joshua.
The former British titlist will take to the ring as the odds-on 4/11 favourite with Coral to secure another success this weekend, in a fight with plenty on the line for both men.
High-stakes battle for heavyweights Whyte and Browne
As is the current rankings in the division, the eventual victor of this clash in London will likely be in prime position for a crack at world honours later in 2018.
Brixton-based fighter Whyte is presently ranked at number one by the WBC, making a previously speculated encounter with world champion Deontay Wilder a possibility in the near future.
Browne has held the WBA ‘Regular’ strap in the past, winning it when he stopped Ruslan Chagaev back in March 2016, but was then stripped after failing a drugs test.
The 38-year-old is hoping to get amongst the belts again soon and he is 6/1 with Betfair to knock out Whyte in their imminent clash. He is on a run of four successive stoppage victories since November 2014, including a second-round KO of Matthew Greer last June.
Jamaican-born Whyte was last in the ring in October, when he managed to gain a unanimous decision win over Finland’s Robert Helenius, though he failed to impress in an underwhelming showing.
The 29-year-old also outpointed Dereck Chisora at the end of 2016, in what was a much more entertaining affair, and the home favourite is a promising 11/10 with Betfair to earn a decision triumph this time around.
Whyte has failed to prove he has the power to really worry Browne during the course of proceedings, but he is 5/2 with Ladbrokes to halt his Aussie opponent early.
Meanwhile, Browne is 6/1 with BetVictor to secure the nod of the judges on what will be his sixth bout of his professional career in the UK.
High stakes are on the line for both men, with a defeat undoubtedly set to damage their career prospects, but success would likely lead to a grand opportunity, given the current state of the division.
