Spence Jr seeks statement second defence over Ocampo as Crawford emerges in division

IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr (23-0, 20 KOs) will make the second defence of his title this weekend in Texas, as he faces latest challenger Carlos Ocampo (22-0, 13 KOs).

The American brutally dispatched Kell Brook in May last year to claim his current crown before making a successful maiden defence when stopping Lamont Peterson in January.

Terence Crawford’s recent emergence in the 147lbs division has added extra spice to the mix and Spence Jr will be aiming to put on a statement showing at The Ford Center at The Star.

‘The Truth’ will take to the ring for his latest title defence as the overwhelming odds-on 1/33 favourite with Coral to retain his strap in Frisco.

Meanwhile, fellow unbeaten Mexican challenger Ocampo is set to enter proceedings as a massive 14/1 outsider with bet365 to pull off what would be a huge upset on his American debut.

‘The Truth’ out to prove he’s number one welterweight

In what is typically one of the most enthralling divisions in the sport, many of the supposedly top welterweight names have gone quiet in recent times.

The likes of Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman should all be highly promising opponents for both Spence Jr and Crawford, but there is no sign of such match-ups on the horizon.

Arguably the best pairing that can be made in boxing at the moment is that of Spence Jr facing Crawford, after the latter recently battered and stopped Jeff Horn to become WBO champion.

The now three-weight world titlist has outlined intentions of colliding with the IBF belt holder in what would be a mouth-watering encounter, and a solid win for Spence Jr this weekend could help boost prospects.

He is odds-on 1/20 with Betfair to halt Ocampo in the second defence of his belt, while a decision success is available at evens.

The rising American star can also be backed at a much more promising 4/1 with Betfair to finish his Mexican challenger in the fifth round of their meeting.

Given the vast contrast in quality and rampant run of form Spence Jr is presently enjoying along his rise to prominence, this bout is likely only ending one way in the Texas heat this weekend.

Errol Spence Jr is 4/1 to win in round 5 with Betfair.
