Bayern Munich will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Bayer Leverkusen in the first Bundesliga game after the international break at the Allianz Arena on Friday evening.
Going into this crunch showdown, Bayern sit in fifth spot in the table. But more surprisingly, they have picked up just 12 points from a possible 21 which represents their worst return at this juncture of a campaign in over 20 years.
Having started the season in ominous fashion, Julian Nagelsmann’s men have dropped off the pace as they seek to land a record-extending 11th Bundesliga title, and perhaps they are still adjusting to life without Robert Lewandowski.
Meanwhile, Leverkusen have struggled to recapture the heights of last term, as they have won one of their seven games to date, sitting in 15th spot.
Last term, Leverkusen averaged 2.35 goals per game, and even though they agreed contract extensions with Patrik Schick and Florian Wirtz, they are down to 1.28 goals this season.
Nevertheless, this promises to be an intriguing game, and to whet your appetite, we have handpicked a couple of tips for you to mull over ahead of kick-off at 7.30pm.
Bayern Munich to end winless streak
Before the international break, Bayern were rather sloppy as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Augsburg. Indeed, it was the first time in 87 top-flight matches that the reigning champions had failed to score.
Clearly, Bayern weren’t as clinical as they should have been, and this point was impressed upon by Nagelsmann, who bemoaned his side’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal.
Bayern’s output has also slowed in other areas when you consider other performance indicators, such as sprints per game and intensive runs, and they have looked sluggish.
However, with the ‘Fab Four’ at his disposal, which includes Sadio Mane and Jamal Musiala at his disposal, it won’t be long before Bayern erupt once again.
There is an embarrassment of attacking riches and Bayern just need to get back to basics. Bayern will be eager to put on a show and they are undefeated in each of their past six meetings with Leverkusen.
I like the look of the Correct Score section and I think Bayern could run out 2-0 winners over Leverkusen, which is available at 9/1 with William Hill if you fancy following up on that.
Jamal Musiala to draw first blood
At the moment, Musiala has looked undroppable. He is playing with a maturity beyond his years, and he gives Bayern an added dynamism going forward.
With four goals and one assist to his name, Musiala has provided some meaty contributions for Bayern, and he will relish getting stuck into Leverkusen.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him feature on the scoresheet and he could break the deadlock. If you are swayed by the Goalscorer Markets, Musiala is available at 7/1 to open the scoring for Bayern with Paddy Power.
