South Wales Battle
The first international break of the season is now behind us, and it is time to launch into a fiery EFL derby.
Bluebirds Attack Swans
The first international break usually gives clubs the ideal opportunity to hit the reset button and it is a button that both Cardiff and Swansea will be looking to press before their anticipated clash on Saturday evening.
Perhaps more so in the Swansea camp and with Michael Duff taking over the managerial baton from Southampton boss Russell Martin, the former Barnsley head honcho is still looking for his first league win of the season.
Five games played and only two draws can be considered as positives. Not only is there no league win on the board but the side also find themselves in the bottom three of the Championship – not a position that many would have expected the club to be in right now.
Then again, things are not all that better in Cardiff. Erol Bulut’s entry into English football has certainly been something of a learning curve, as the former Fenerbahce boss has only won one of his first five league games in charge.
The only win for Saturday’s hosts came at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday – another club that also find themselves in the bottom three before the resumption of the Championship season and the only other thing to shout about is an opening weekend draw with Leeds at Elland Road.
Two clubs whose Premier League years seem a long time ago on the basis of current performance. Two managers who are still getting to grips with their newly inherited charges and trying to work out a playing style that works.
While Michael Duff has made headlines for perhaps the wrong reasons in the build up to this encounter. After seeing his side lose 2-1 to Bristol City before the international break, he said he would rather earn promotion and lose to Cardiff twice.
Not a statement that has gone down all that well at the Liberty Stadium and with an apparent backtrack being subsequently made, there is a sense that the 45-year-old is now learning about the magnitude of this fixture.
A magnitude that has only increased when you look at the start that both teams have had. The result will not define either Cardiff or Swansea’s season but defeat for either side will only add more pressure to their manager’s shoulders.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and both teams to score is the first port of call. Especially as this has occurred in every game that Cardiff and Swansea have contested this season. I am backing the home win but no clean sheet in addition at odds of 4/1.
In addition to this, a correct score then seems the logical step forward. If Cardiff are giving up a clean sheet in return for three points, then a 2-1 final score makes perfect sense and especially at odds of 9/1.
