Charlton to beat Walsall

While things may have been rather nerve-wracking for Charlton in the first round as they required penalties to knock out QPR, it was still a significant result.

Since that evening, they have picked up four points from their past three League One encounters, and they are building momentum. With goals weighing in all over the park, there hasn’t been an over-reliance on Jaydon Stockley.

Walsall, in the meantime, were comfortable 2-0 winners in the opening round, and they have looked in fine fettle themselves, registering just one defeat from five outings in League Two.

The Addicks have a stronghold over Walsall, winning 15 of their 30 encounters, although this will be their first meeting in over three years. Nevertheless, Charlton have the edge and they should safely book their spot into round three.

Bolton to beat Aston Villa

A trip to Bolton should never be undertaken lightly, especially when things have been unravelling in the Premier League for Aston Villa.

They have looked bereft of ideas under Steven Gerrard, who is coming under increasing pressure after a tepid start to the campaign. A solitary point and six goals conceded tell its own story, and they were very much second best against Crystal Palace last weekend.

Bolton, meanwhile, have looked watertight at the back, and with the crowd behind them, this could have the makings for an upset. This looks like one of the standout fixtures, and Bolton won’t disappoint here under the lights.

Southampton to beat Cambridge

Having warmed up for the EFL Cup with a 2-1 win over Leicester, things are looking decidedly more exciting for Saints fans who will be hoping to push on under Ralph Hasenhuttl this term.

Cambridge, in the meantime, are perhaps better known for their FA Cup exploits than the EFL Cup. Although they are mid-table in League One, the gulf in class between the two sides will be evident.

Hasenhuttl will take the competition seriously and he will put out a fairly strong side which should overpower Cambridge at the Abbey Stadium.

West Brom to beat Derby

There is always a little bit of spice to this encounter, and there is probably little that these two teams don’t know each other.

While Derby won’t be short on confidence, their priority this season will be to get back into the Championship.

West Brom, meanwhile, have flattered to deceive at times, and the EFL Cup could be a welcome distraction.

On paper, West Brom looks like the better-equipped side, and Derby won’t play the role of party poopers.
