Euro 21 finalists England meet AFCON winner’s Senegal in the last 16 of the World Cup with a place in the quarter-final’s at stake. Southgate’s side came through Group B as winners with seven points and a plus seven goal difference, the best qualifying campaign of any team in the tournament. As for Senegal they progressed through a 2nd placed finish in Group A thanks to wins against Ecuador and Qatar, giving them six points.
We are getting to the nitty-gritty of the tournament and I will do the same with my bets, let’s go for the jugular… Keep reading if you are here for a big odds bet.
What have we learned from the group stages? That we didn’t need to worry as much as we thought after that horrific Nation’s League experience. For two of the three matches we have looked like a team capable of winning the tournament, and we also know that we have a squad full of hungry players. When called upon every player has stepped up to the task when given the chances and it looks like we may have finally seen the back of that 5-3-2 setup. Don’t get it wrong, it served us well, we got to a World Cup semi-final and Euro Final playing in that system, but it was never an easy watch and you couldn’t help but feel it was hindering our creative players.

No team is yet to take this tournament by the horns, Brazil, Spain and France have shown flashes of brilliance but they have also looked beatable on occasions. What has been noticeable in this World Cup is that the big boys can be got at, if the game plan is right and the right organisation is there. Hopefully, we don’t have a shock result on Sunday though!
One player who I hope has played his way into the starting lineup is Marcus Rashford, pre tournament I hold my hands up and say I would have used him sparingly but he seems to have come alive in Qatar. With three goals so far during this campaign he’s been our brightest spark. The Manchester United forward looks back to his best and he is priced at 21/10 to score anytime with Betfair. He is also 9/1 to win the Golden Boot if anyone is tempted.
Another talking point for England has been the role of Harry Kane and whether he is giving England enough in attack. Although he hasn’t found the back of the net he has provided three assists during the group stages, more than any other player in the competition. T
raditionally your number nine would be the target man who is scoring all the goals, and Harry has been that at times for England, but now it seems he prefers a playmaker role and dropping deep at every opportunity to collect the ball and offload. Kane is priced at 5/2 to assist a goal anytime during the game with Betfair.
Senegal have won their last two games so don’t be surprised if they enter the game with a certain level of confidence. The AFCON winners, although missing star player Sadio Mane still have an array of Champions League talent within their squad and have shown they can hold their own on the big stage.
In their opening game against the Netherlands I actually thought they were unlucky to not come away with something, despite the 2-0 scoreline. Over the course of the group stages they picked up six yellow cards, so a market that is worth taking a look at is Senegal to have more cards than England at 5/6, given that England are yet to be carded in this tournament.
England to win, England to have the most corners and Senegal to have the most cards is priced at 11/4 with Betfair.
Team news
Ben White has left the England camp for family reasons, other than that the Three Lions have no injury concerns.
Idrissa Gueye will miss this fixture for disciplinary reasons, Cheikhou Kouyate sustained an ankle injury in the first game and has since been ruled out of training.
England Video Tips
Sam has put together his thoughts on the game into a video which you can watch below.
