Thursday Sunday Football

With Arsenal having a five-point gap at the top at the start of the weekend, it may be eroded to two by the time they get to Fulham on Sunday.

Another Awayday Test

When Arsenal found themselves dumped out of this season’s FA Cup by Manchester City, manager Mikel Arteta did at least manage to find the positives from the exit. Positives that came in the form of a slightly easier schedule for the rest of the campaign.

While from January’s departure up until the start of this month, it has been Premier League football all the way for the Gunners. A set of challenges that they have dealt with expertly well, as they find themselves five points clear at the top of the table.

But with the business end of the season now upon us, this is when things could start to get a little more difficult for the North London outfit. With Europa League action now thrown into the mix, does UEFA’s secondary club competition now become an unwanted distraction.

Especially as their Round of 16 tie with Sporting Lisbon is very much in the balance. A 2-2 draw in the Portuguese capital means manager Arteta cannot afford to rest too many key names in the return leg at the Emirates.

A job still to do in Europe and another job to do at the weekend, as they make the short trip across the capital to face Fulham. A short trip perhaps but a tough exam for Arsenal’s title credentials, as observers wonder if their midweek European exploits are going to hamper their domestic hopes.

With Fulham still keeping one eye on European qualification of their own for next season, Marco Silva and his players will not be willing to roll out the red carpet and after being edged out by Brentford on Monday, the Cottagers will look to find a first league win in three attempts.

The West London derby defeat to the Bees would certainly have stung at the start of the week and the home draw with Wolves the week before would have rankled just as much. Two points dropped in the eyes of manager Silva but a measure of how far this Fulham side have come.

As Liverpool have seemingly awoken from their slumber and Chelsea are hoping recent Champions League success revives their own campaign, Fulham may just find themselves missing out on a European invite through the league and may have settle for an FA Cup win instead.

However, there is still plenty of football to be played between now and May and Sunday will give us a true idea of how realistic Fulham’s top seven hopes are and also whether Arsenal can mix it both home and abroad.

With that in mind, our latest bet builder is now up for grabs, and it looks like this:

  • Match result draw
  • Willian to score
  • Under 3 goals

Bet Builder for Fulham v Arsenal

For my latest bet builder offering, I have placed the focus on Willian. The Fulham forward has been the poster boy of Fulham’s sensible recruitment and with the added incentive of him scoring against a former club, he is my first pick before Sunday.

A goal for the Brazilian and one that actually halts Arsenal in their tracks. I do see the Gunners getting a point for their troubles but I do not see them getting all three. A draw which offers no more than two total goals – it has to be a 1-1 draw for this to work but if it does, we win big at 40/1.
