Manchester United v Manchester City Match Preview

Since the World Cup break, Manchester United have played six games and won them all. Yes, they’ve not played the highest quality teams, but have beaten everyone with relative ease. This is a step up, but the team will be confident, and this is probably the best that United fans have felt going into the Manchester Derby for a few years.

Manchester City on the other hand, haven’t quite been perfect since the break. Dumped out of the EFL Cup by Southampton in the build up to this one, they were also held at home by Everton at the end of December. This shouldn’t be a game they need any encouragement for, of course, but if City needed a reminder that they couldn’t take things easy, the Southampton game came at just the right time to deliver that before this one.

Going into the weekend, City are five points behind Arsenal in the title race, and both teams go away to their rivals this weekend. Arsenal are at Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, a win here for City would add further pressure onto that game, as the gap would be just two points when Arsenal kick off.

Of course, if things go the opposite way, and Manchester United win this game, Arsenal will be playing on Sunday with the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points.

Manchester United head into the weekend in fourth place, level with Newcastle above them, and they have a game in hand on them too. It’s been plain sailing for United since the World Cup and let’s not forget, the Cristiano Ronaldo debacle. But United have managed to get through in great fashion, the test of how far they have actually come, is with this game.

It looks set to be a classic, both teams will of course be playing for city dominance in Manchester, but there is so much more at stake with the league standings.
