Newcastle’s Halted Momentum
For many weeks now there has been talk about Arsenal’s game in hand. One that had the ability to further tilt the title balance of power in their direction and with this encounter finally played, we all know where we stand in terms of the championship chase.
Both the Gunners and Manchester City have now played the same number of league encounters, but it is Mikel Arteta’s men who currently find themselves five-points clear at the top – a cushion that could just see them over the line.
However, there is still plenty more Premier League football to come between now and the end of May and with another round of fixtures on this weekend’s agenda, City will look to get the better of a currently floundering Newcastle side.
A side that after finally seeing their lengthy league unbeaten run come to an at the hands of Liverpool – a defeat that also saw Nick Pope use his hands in completely the wrong section of the playing field, then followed it up with a loss to Manchester United in the EFL Cup final.
The issue just as it was in the home reverse to Liverpool, was a quickfire double of goals. The old one-two combination that knocked the Magpies on the canvas and with the St James’ Park outfit struggling to score one goal at the moment, finding two is becoming nigh on impossible.
Which is something that manager Eddie Howe needs to address and fast. Especially as the race for Champions League qualification is beginning to heat up. No longer are Newcastle in the top four but they also have the red half of Merseyside breathing down their necks.
In fairness to Newcastle, they are well ahead in terms of their current project and the timescales that the club’s owners would have set out. However, a dalliance with the top-four is certainly also going to change the ambition of the hierarchy at the same time.
It is not necessarily Champions League or bust but it would certainly be a welcome reward at the same time and now with the EFL Cup a mere footnote in football history, the Tyneside outfit will look to put themselves back in top gear.
A gear that City themselves found in midweek, as they made light work of Bristol City in the FA Cup at Ashton Gate and with Phil Foden seemingly finding his bright spark once more, he will now look to electrify the home support on Saturday.
With that in mind, our latest bet builder is now up for grabs, and it looks like this:
- Manchester City to win the first half
- Phil Foden to score anytime
- Both teams to score No
For my latest bet builder offering, I have placed the focus on Phil Foden and although Pep Guardiola does like to play forward roulette, the England international should have played himself into the team after his recent FA Cup showing.
I have backed Foden to score anytime and if this goal becomes before the interval, it will go some way to ticking off my second pick. A City win at half time and no Newcastle goals across 90 minutes is also added to the bargain and with this all pieced together, it is priced at odds of 10/1.
