When you look at the legendary Dutch national teams of the past, they were outfits that always possessed an element of elegant effortless. Total football was the maxim but unfortunately it did not bring total domination of world football.

With De Oranje having to make do with being tournament bridesmaids on three separate occasions, they are arguably the most talented nation to never win a World Cup. While it is a wrong that they will finally look to put right in 2022.

Then again, when you look at the current construction of the Dutch national team, the profile is more pragmatic than prancing about on the playing field and perhaps a change of style may finally get this nation over the line.

These days there are still talented players that wear the famous Netherlands shirt, but it is certainly not a list of names that leap off the page and this may allow to Louis Van Gaal’s men to fly under the radar.

While one man in particular is certainly becoming a household name and with Cody Gakpo scoring three goals in as many World Cup matches, any potential January price tag will have only increased in value.

Although any transfer talk will have to put on the backburner for as long as the PSV forward and his teammates are still in Qatar and although a Round of 16 pairing with the USA can be considered favourable, Gregg Berhalter’s side should not be underestimated either.

After finishing Group B with five points to their name, the US Men’s National Team are yet to taste defeat in the Middle East and after solid showings against both Wales and England, they were perhaps unfortunate not to pick at least one win from the two.

On the evidence that has been provided, this USA side are certainly capable of stitching together good periods of play, and they were largely the dominant force in the first 45 minutes of both the Wales and England encounters

Now though, the task will be to stitch it together on either side of the interval and of course with this being the Round of 16, both extra time and penalties are also on hand to break any earlier deadlock.

For my latest bet builder offering, the spotlight is being shown on Memphis Depay. Admittedly it would have been tempting to back Cody Gakpo to score for a fourth match in a row, but I think there is more value in his teammate breaking Saturday’s deadlock.
