It’s Greece Lightning

Olympiakos’ derby clash with Panathinaikos was abandoned at the weekend, now it is West Ham who enter the Karaiskakis Stadium cauldron.

No Fireworks Please

After a bright start to the new Premier League season, West Ham’s bubble was certainly burst at the weekend. A 4-1 defeat at Aston Villa suggests David Moyes’ men still have work to do if they are to finish in the European places.

Then again, the Hammers do always have a backdoor route up their sleeve, and it was a similar route they used last season - win the Europa Conference League and appear in the Europa League the following campaign.

Earn more European silverware at the end of this season and the East London outfit will be appearing in the Champions League. That is the pipe dream but now the former Upton Park residents must turn it into reality.

Reality that sees them to take to the field for Matchday 3 and the fiery environment that will be found within Olympiakos’ Karaiskakis Stadium – a ground that always has an arsenal of flares and fireworks at the ready.

To the point where last weekend’s Greek Super League clash with Panathinaikos was curtailed. If fan safety is paramount, player welfare is just as important. The visitors’ Juankar was struck in the 50th minute, the game subsequently failed to reach 90.

A scenario that is unlikely to unfold under the watchful eye of UEFA governance and with 90 minutes scheduled for Thursday, West Ham know that they will have another tough away trip to deal with.

That said, they passed their previous European module with flying colours. A trip to Freiburg could have presented a banana skin in Germany during Matchday 2, there were no such slip ups at the Stade Europa-Park.

To the point where West Ham have already found some breathing space within the Europa League’s Group A. Already three points clear of Freiburg, another two clear of the team that plays host to them in a few hours.

Qualification to the Round of 16 cannot be secured in Greece but a huge step could be taken by West Ham and especially if they manage to extend the gap between themselves and Olympiakos to eight points.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Olympiakos having only lost once at home since April, their opponents may struggle to deal a European hammer blow. With that in mind, I have decided to back the draw and both teams to score at odds of 7/2.

Our First Prediction

In addition to this, I have backed West Ham to roll up their sleeves in a bid for a draw. The hosts may draw first blood and be ahead at the break, I see the visitors restoring parity at the final whistle at odds of 14/1.
