Poland v Argentina Match Preview
As the final round of Group C fixtures appear around the corner, all four teams are still in with a shout of qualifying for the Round of 16. If Argentina get the better of Poland on Wednesday, Lionel Scaloni’s men will take a huge step towards knockout football.
While if Robert Lewandowski can add to his burgeoning tally of one World Cup goal and help lead Poland to a second successive tournament win, finishing top of the table will be guaranteed. Not only that, but it would offer an additional prize to go alongside it.
Because with previous winners France in place to be the more than likely winners of Group D, avoiding them in the Round of 16 will serve as a relief to whoever finishes top of the Group C equivalent.
Which is another reason why Argentina must go for the jugular against Poland. Not only would a win over Czesław Michniewicz’s men potentially avoid a heavyweight clash with France but a draw may not even be enough to advance.
With Saudi Arabia taking on Mexico at the same time, all eyes will be on the crisp white shirt of Herve Renard and if the suave manager can lead his charges to victory, they could advance at the expense of Argentina.
The equation is relatively simple. If Argentina win their clash and if Saudi Arabia do not win by two more goals themselves, it will be Lionel Scaloni’s men who bag that all-important top of the table spot.
For extra context, say Argentina win 1-0 and Saudi Arabia win 3-0, it would be the latter who finish top of Group C. If Argentina win 1-0 and Saudi Arabia win 2-0 (or any other combination where the Saudi’s win is only one goal more), the South American nation finish top.
However, if Poland hold Argentina to a draw and Saudi Arabia get the better of Mexico by any margin. It would mean Herve Renard’s heroes would finish top of the group and the Poles would make do with second place.
