Premier League: Tottenham v Southampton Preview and Betting Tips

Tottenham hoping to get off to a flyer…

Tottenham welcome Southampton to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday and they will be hoping to lay down a marker of intent in front of their home fans.

After securing Champions League football on the final day of last season, Tottenham will need to cope with the dual demands of league and elite European football.

Southampton, meanwhile, will have fond memories of their last trip to north London where they won 3-2 in a frenetic affair, however, they have generally struggled on the opening day of the campaign.

This fixture usually guarantees a glut of goals, and to whet your appetite ahead of the game, we have handpicked a few tips which you can use to fill your betting slips.

Tottenham to make light work of Southampton

Unlike last season where Tottenham let slip a lead against Southampton as the game headed into the dying embers, Antonio Conte’s men are a much-improved outfit.

In pre-season, they looked solid, and bar a 1-0 defeat against Roma, they were unbeaten, and the team got some good minutes under their belts.

Conte has already made six acquisitions this summer, so it will be fascinating to see how he lines up his squad, and how he will use the likes of Richarlison and Djed Spence.

Saints, meanwhile, always produce a horror show at some point under Ralph Hasenhuttl (at least one 6-0 loss or worse) each season. Well, things might not get that bad this time, but as we know, the Saints’ opening-day record is wretched by all accounts, with just two wins from 26 outings.

Tottenham, if they hit their stride early on, could blow away the Saints. If you are tempted by the Correct Score market, then Unibet is serving up a tasty price of 19/2 for Tottenham to register a 3-1 victory.

Cristian Romero to go into the book

Cristian Romero was a revelation for Tottenham last season, and he looked so assured in the heart of defence. He is the type of player who relishes a full-bloodied challenge, and usually they are well timed.

Last term, Tottenham fared well in the tackles department, winning 58% of their tackles, and Romero made his presence felt. However, the Argentine at times can be a bit overzealous and he could well be cautioned against Saints.

Generally, Tottenham were well disciplined last season, picking up just one red card. But if you think Romero will be yellow carded, he’s trading at a short 15/8 with William Hill.

Son Heung-Min to take home the match ball

Son Heung-Min was electric last season for Tottenham and he will be instrumental if they are going to finally end their long wait for silverware – a League Cup or FA Cup triumph appears eminently more likely than the Premier League.

Nevertheless, the South Korean hitman boasts an excellent record against the Saints, scoring six goals in his past four outings.

At St Mary’s a couple of seasons ago, Son was deadly as he netted four, and he will likely be among the Golden Shoe contenders come the end of the campaign. We think there is value in the goalscorer market, and Paddy Power is pricing up Son at 12/1 to bag a hat-trick, which may not seem so fanciful.
