Midweek Paris Trip

After conceding a late Jonathan David goal on Sunday, PSG had to make do with a share of the points at Lille.

David Stuns Goliath

Sunday evening was a largely frustrating one for PSG, largely but not completely at the same time. Although they may have failed to get the better of Lille at the Stade Pierre Mauroy, their nearest title challengers failed to get any points on the board.

A draw for PSG but defeats for Nice and Monaco in that same weekend means Luis Enrique’s men have now extended their margins at the top of the table to five and seven points respectively – the kind of margins that look incredibly difficult to claw back.

Difficult going as far as almost impossible and although this PSG side is still something of a work in progress under the stewardship of Luis Enrique, there is still more than enough for the former Barcelona manager to work with.

Neymar and Lionel Messi may have long since departed, Kylian Mbappe is now the undisputed king of Paris and with the reported Real Madrid target having netted his 16th league goal of the season on Sunday, he may have added another million euros to his potential transfer fee.

Potential because nobody knows if Mbappe will ever sign a new contract in the French capital or whether he will depart on a free transfer. His current employers hope it is the former, the Spanish giants are praying it is the latter.

While Wednesday’s opponents Metz will be praying that Mbappe has a rare off day, 16 goals for the season have come courtesy of just 15 appearances. The 24-year-old is currently averaging a league strike every 77 minutes.

Not the numbers that Metz would want to hear before a trip to the Parc des Princes, even less so when they have lost each of their last three Ligue 1 fixtures. Defeats to Lille and Brest were then added to by the weekend’s reverse to Montpellier.

A trio of defeats that leaves Laszlo Boloni’s men just two places above the relegation zone. Two places and only three points clear of a resurgent Lyon, if the trajectory of these two teams continues, their respective statuses could soon be switched.

However, Metz may consider themselves to be in nothing more than a rut, in the three matches before their recent unwanted trio, the Stage Saint-Symphorien side picked up seven points from nine and will be hoping for some festive generosity from their hosts.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I think PSG will have the perfect response after dropping points at the weekend. No value in the home win on its own, plenty of value in a three-goal winning margin and PSG by three is currently priced at 15/4.

Our First Prediction

In addition to this, I am going to opt for the correct score of 4-1 PSG. A routine win but at least a Christmas consolation for the visitors and this goalscoring feast can be found at the gluttonous price of 12/1.
