Carlo Ancelotti’s men will be feeling supremely confident after blitzing past Liverpool 5-2 in midweek in the Champions League with a masterclass in counter-attacking football.

Atletico, in the meantime, will wish to strengthen their grip on a top-four spot, and they have been in excellent form since the turn of the year, losing just once in La Liga.

However, Diego Simeone will be without Rodrigo de Paul, who has been ruled out with a muscle injury which could see Pablo Barrios thrown into the first team fold. It could be a steep learning curve for Barrios, as he has only just graduated from the reserves.

Real Madrid to come out on top

Against Liverpool at Anfield, Real looked to be down and out when they were trailing 2-0 after just 15 minutes, but they produced a stunning turnaround and showed their undoubted quality.

While facing Atletico will be another test of their title credentials, Real won’t be fazed having lost just one of their past 13 games against them in May 2022.

When the two sides previously met in the Copa del Rey last month, Real stormed to a 3-1 victory with Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior completing the damage in extra time.

Simeone has a mixed record against Real, although he has tasted victory four times over Los Blancos while Ancelotti has been at the helm.

However, there is a degree of pressure on Atletico as they face a battle to secure a top-four spot, and enjoy the riches of Champions League football next term.

Given the form Real are in, I believe they will win comfortably, and my first pick is for them to win by a margin of two goals, which is paying out at odds of 4/1 with Paddy Power.

Marco Asensio to open the scoring

While Benzema and Vinicius Junior will get most of the plaudits, Real are more than the sum of their parts.

In every department, they are oozing with class and they can slice teams apart at will.

Although Benzema has been in exceptional form in front of goal, Marco Asensio is in a bit of a purple patch, scoring in each of his last two La Liga outings against Elche and Osasuna.

Asensio has never managed to score in three consecutive games for Real in 211 top-flight appearances, but that could well change.
