The Champions League fixtures are coming thick and fast, as we have a second gameweek in as many weeks.
A Trip To Poland
After being rather humbled by Real Madrid last week, Celtic will now look to open their Champions League points account for the season, as they travel to the Polish capital of Warsaw.
Jumping Through Hoops
Although Celtic have been tasked with a trip to Poland, it is not Ekstraklasa opposition that will welcome them on Wednesday. Instead, it is Ukrainian giants Shakhtar who will soon lie in wait for Ange Postecoglou’s men.
While it is the Donetsk outfit who find themselves top of Group F as we approach the second round of Champions League fixtures and although we cannot give too much credence to standings at this stage, it does perhaps make the task in hand more difficult for Celtic.
Especially as Shakhtar made light work of RB Leipzig last week and after earning what can only be described as a surprise win in the former East Germany, Igor Jovićević's side are no longer the surprise team in the group.
Which means Celtic are going to need to be at their best in Warsaw and with them being afforded the weekend off, such an enforced hiatus could work one of two ways. First, it could give the team a welcome rest before their skirmish with Shakhtar.
Then again, it could also hamper the rather positive momentum that Celtic have largely displayed this season and although a week off had to come, it may have come at the worst time for the defending Scottish Premiership champions.
With that said, there was no rest for Shakhtar at the weekend and with the return of the Ukrainian Premier League being a rather welcome sight for football’s global family, three points were also welcomed by the team that currently finds themselves second in the table.
Just like Celtic must make the step up when it comes to competing in continental competitions, so must Shakhtar and therefore, this should make for a rather interesting clash at the Stadion Wojska Polskiego.
Of course, our interest is focused squarely on the betting markets and although Celtic have been priced as favourites before kick-off, I think such a standing is rather generous when you consider last week’s Group F results.
Which is why I have split the difference between the two sides and with a draw, currently priced at 5/2 with Bet365, I think a share of the points will lead to a nice bit of profit at the final whistle.
Staying on the topic of hopeful profit, I have also placed some focus on Marian Shved and with the Ukrainian winger having scored twice in Leipzig last week, I am also backing him to score first at odds of 10/1.
