An Absolute Miracle
Peterborough snuck into the playoffs on the final day of the League One season. The Posh have since taken a massive step towards Wembley.
Feeling Rather Posh
There are results that can be explained by the drama that is connected with the playoffs but there are also some results at this stage of the season that simply blow your mind. One in the latter category would have been Peterborough’s 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
A result that although does not take the Posh straight through to the League One playoff final at the end of the month is one that almost should do due to its magnitude and with a four-goal cushion to sit on, a trip to London is now 90 minutes away.
A foregone conclusion perhaps but at the same time Sheffield Wednesday will have to tell themselves that is not truly over until it is over. If they can get the first goal at Hillsborough on Thursday, the complexion of the tie will tilt ever so slightly in their favour.
Then again, this Sheffield Wednesday team is still likely to be licking their wounds after such a heavy defeat in the first leg. There was always going to be an element of deflation after missing out on automatic promotion, but Darren Moore’s men were completely flat last Friday.
To the point where they were shellshocked by a Peterborough side that simply have nothing to lose but everything to gain. After just making the playoffs with a final day win over Barnsley, Darren Ferguson’s side are certainly the wildcard in all of this.
After depriving Derby the opportunity to extend their season by at least a couple of weeks, the Posh are now set to deprive the Owls of another trip to Wembley. Should this be the case, it will also mean that the Yorkshiremen will be tasked with another campaign in England’s third tier.
At the same time, what is a foregone conclusion before kickoff is arguably the freest of free hits. Whereas Peterborough had nothing to lose before the first leg got underway, the same status can now be afforded to their opponents for the second.
One could argue that Wednesday should have earned themselves automatic promotion out of League One and with 96 points in their bank account, it is incredibly harsh that they are not guaranteed a place in the Championship.
However, with everything then reset to 0, the playoffs does not care if you earn that 96 or the 77 that Peterborough earned for themselves. All it cares about is how many goals either team scores across two semi-final legs.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although I think Sheffield Wednesday will restore some pride, they will not have things their own way. With this in mind, I am backing a half time draw and then a home win at odds of 15/4.
While to build on this further, I am going to go with both teams to score on Thursday and although a Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 win will do nothing in the grand scheme of things, odds of 15/2 could bump up the funds in your betting account come full time.
