Tip 1: Sunderland to beat Wolves - 13/10
Having defied expectations so far, Sunderland came crashing back to earth with a bump following a 2-0 reverse away to Manchester United in their last match before the international break. Perhaps it shouldn’t have come as a surprise given they have now failed to score in three of their four away games this term (W1, D1, L2).
The Black Cats haven’t been prolific either, netting just seven times. However, they are currently ninth in the table, while Wolves’ problems have been well-documented, and Vitor Pereira’s charges are going through the motions.
Rooted to the bottom of the table with just two points collected, Wolves have picked up two draws in their past two outings, but they were denied wins following late interventions by Tottenham and Brighton respectively.
Unsurprisingly, Wolves have spent the greatest proportion of time trailing in terms of minutes (381) in the league this term, but Sunderland won’t be in any mood to show any mercy. I expect Sunderland to make the most of home comforts, where they remain unbeaten, and deliver another three points.
Tip 2: Sunderland Over 4.5 shots on target - 7/5
While there hasn’t been much daylight between Sunderland and Wolves on the expected goals (xG) front or total shots taken, Sunderland have had significantly more cutting edge in attack.
Regis Le Bris has won many admirers for his side’s style of football, and with a tough run of fixtures on the horizon, beating Wolves is a necessity. Interestingly, Sunderland have averaged over 4.5 shots on target even if they haven’t always been richly rewarded.
I see no reason why they can’t fulfil this line, and for the stats boffs out there, Over 4.5 shots on target seems reasonable.
Tip 3: Granit Xhaka to score from outside the area - 16/1
A marquee signing, Granit Xhaka represented a bit of a coup when Sunderland secured his services from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer.
While he’s yet to open his account for the Tyneside outfit, he is the club’s top assist maker in the league with three to his name. Xhaka got on the scoresheet during a World Cup qualifier against Sweden last week, netting from the penalty spot which will have put a spring in his step.
Despite being far from prolific, Xhaka has a penchant for long-distance screamers. Wilson Isidor has grabbed many of the headlines for Sunderland, but I think Xhaka will step up to the plate and produce a moment of magic which has inviting odds attached.
