EFL Pundit Gab Sutton is back with his best bets for the weekend’s action…
Norwich to win at Blackpool – 17/20
Norwich’s first 10 games couldn’t have gone much better results wise, with 20 points accrued for Dean Smith’s side, who sit second in the table.
Performances leave some room for improvement, which the Canaries are hoping will come once the injuries clear up, which there has been some progress on over the international break.
In Marcelino Nunez, Teemu Pukki and Josh Sargent, though, the Yellows have the personnel to do damage to Blackpool, who have been defeated in three of their last four games.
Michael Appleton feels his side are getting into some decent areas but the final ball has been missing, and it’s affecting their ability to create chances.
Sheffield United to beat Birmingham – 4/9
Paul Heckingbottom’s side are hoping to complete a fifth consecutive victory to nil, after going 440 minutes of football without conceding a goal.
The Blades will have to accomplish that, though, without a number of defenders including the influential Anel Ahmedhodžić.
They do, though, have a creative midfield of Oli Norwood, Sander Berge and Iliman Ndiaye, who could run the show against Birmingham.
John Eustace is doing a good job with Blues but they are short on strength in depth and have had to rely on their academy more than they would have liked so far this season.
The B9 outfit have shown signs that they will have enough to get to 50 points, but it’s unlikely that any of them will come at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield Wednesday to win at Port Vale – 19/20
Sheffield Wednesday beat Wycombe 3-1 last week thanks to goals from Barry Bannan and Callum Paterson, after a Joe Jacobson own goal.
Darren Moore had the luxury of starting a front-three of Josh Windass, Lee Gregory and Michael Smith, each of whom bring something different to the equation.
Windass is a direct forward who loves to run beyond, Gregory is a neat, hardworking link-up forward who can poach a few, while Smith is an industrious target man who is always a threat from crosses.
The Owls have the means to unlock opponents in different ways, not to mention a level of strength in depth at the envy of everyone else in the division – including Port Vale.
Considering their delayed summer activity, the Valiants will be happy with how they have began life at this level under Darrell Clarke, but two points from four games against top eight opposition suggests they may struggle to get the better of the top teams.
Stevenage to win at Crawley – 5/6
Crawley Town owner Preston Johnson is flying over from America this week to be around the club, as he looks to investigate and assess the factors behind the club’s poor start to the season.
The Red Devils have just one win from their first 10 league games, and while EFL Cup victories over higher league opposition in Bristol Rovers and Fulham offers some encouragement, there could be questions asked of Kevin Betsy and Dan Micciche if Saturday does not go to plan.
Stevenage, meanwhile, occupy third spot in League Two after winning three of their last four league games, with Steve Evans’ side boasting a water-tight defence.
The Boro had to be patient against Harrogate last week, and created so many chances that were spurned, before Dan Sweeney’s 90th-minute header was the feel-good moment.
Crucial late goals like that can do wonders for belief, and there’s every reason to think the Hertfordshire outfit can build on that and retain their place in the top three.
Sutton to win at Gillingham – 11/8
It was heartache for Sutton last week.
Matt Gray’s side looked to be on course for victory over Salford, and a three points that would have taken them just outside the Play-Off places, as they led through Josh Neufville’s second half goal.
Alas, Donovan Wilson’s dismissal turned the tide and the visitors scored two late goals, but if the U’s play on Saturday as they did at 11 v 11 last week, they have every chance of beating an uninspiring Gillingham side.
Neil Harris’ troops have not only just won one of their first 10 league games, they have only scored a paltry two goals.
Very little encouragement has come from performances from the Gills, who have only played well against Rochdale, prime relegation candidates, and Grimsby.
