Women’s Euro 2022: England v Norway Betting Tips & Preview

After an opening win, can England shine against tougher opposition

In England’s second game of Euro 2022, we are once again backing them to win the game and Beth Mead to be involved with a goal. The headline bet we have put together pays out 20/1, as we are adding in an England 2-1 victory.

The Lionesses will look to build on their opening 1-0 win against Austria, next up they face Norway who could prove to be an even stiffer task. A packed out Old Trafford saw a new Euro record attendance of 68,871 fans cheer on England, and perhaps the pressure did contribute to a more reserved performance. In the opening 45 minutes I thought we looked strong, taking a deserved lead into the break thanks to a Beth Mead goal. After the break the shackles never came off, I was left feeling a bit underwhelmed with our lack of creativity and cutting edge.

Sarina Weigman made a bold call with a triple substitution just 63 minutes into the match, one which I ultimately felt backfired. In taking off Kirby, White and Mead in one swoop we lost a lot of our attacking impetus, Austria clearly took confidence from the change of tactic and started to dominate the midfield. Despite the disappointment of England not adding a further goal there were encouraging signs that our back four is up to the task. Rachel Daly did a fantastic job filling in at left-back and Millie Bright was a rock for us. The Leah Williamson debate is still open as to whether she would be put to better use in midfield or centre-half, one or two-times she was caught in possession and against better opposition we could have been punished.

Norway made the strongest possible start to their Euro campaign with a thumping 4-1 win over Northern Ireland. Martin Sjogren’s team were expected to come through that match comfortably, which they did, but that result will carry confidence into this clash. The Norweigans pose a serious challenge to England and have won two of the previous three encounters between the sides. Our opponents are packed with players plying their trade in the Women’s Super League, as well in the Champions League. Weigman will hopefully be thinking of a strategy to keep Caroline Graham Hansen quiet. Hansen scored 10 goals in the qualifying process for this tournament and found herself on the scoresheet against Northern Ireland.

England have knocked Norway out of the previous two World Cup’s, including a 3-0 win in 2019 with goals from Scott, White and Bronze. Right-back Lucy Bronze seems to have her best international moments against Norway, having also scored in England’s 2-1 World Cup win in 2015. Fran Kirby looked like she had never been away against Austria, and she could be the key on Monday night. It is vital we dictate the midfield in order to allow other players to flourish in wider areas and have more runners from deep positions. Ellen White had a quiet game against Austria in the opener, she was successfully marked out of the match so we need to work out a plan to get our star striker more involved on Monday night.

Match stats

  • Someone’s win streak will have to come to an end, Norway are on a winning streak of six games, and England have won their last seven games.
  • This is the first time these two nations have met in the Euro finals.
  • The last time the sides met Norway came from behind to win 2-1 in 2019.
  • England have eliminated Norway from the last two FIFA Women’s World Cup’s.
  • Norway have won two of the last three meetings between the sides.
  • Norway are playing their 12th Euro’s tournament, only Italy have played as many.
  • Norway have won the tournament twice (1987, 1993) and have featured in two finals since then, losing to Germany on both occasions (2005, 2013)

Betting predictions

This game is quite evenly poised on paper, I expect it to be tight and I am hoping for some goalmouth action. Beth Mead did me proud in the first match by getting on the scoresheet and backing up my prediction. I am going to put my faith in her again on Monday night and hope she plays her part in an England win.
