- England Women vs Austria Women
- Euro 2022 - Group A
- Venue: Old Trafford
- Date: Wednesday 6th July 2022 - 20:00 GMT
The Lionesses enter the match as strong favourites, priced at 1/7 to get the win in front of an expected record attendance for the Euro’s.
Our ladies are looking to become just the third home nation to lift the trophy, with Germany (2001) and the Netherlands (2017) the only teams who can claim that accolade.
In charge of the Netherlands 2017 winning side was Sarina Weigman, who now manages current hosts England, and should we go all the way Weigman would be the first manager to win the Euro’s with two different host nations.
England have won all of their seven previous meetings against Austria and have conceded just once during that period, scoring on 22 occasions. We can take further encouragement from the fact we have kept a clean sheet in all of the last six head-to-head matches, so there is plenty of reason to believe we can make a winning start to the tournament.
The most recent clash between the sides was back in November 2021 where Ellen White’s solo goal just before the break was enough to give England a 1-0 win. That was actually the narrowest victory England have ever had over Austria, I expect that Weigman will be planning for a more comfortable three points on Wednesday to set the tone for the rest of the campaign.
A distinguishable face in the Austria goal is Manuela Zinsberger, who plies her trade at Arsenal. Zinsberger is a much improved number one, with excellent shot stopping capabilities, although she is not the most commanding of goalkeepers.
I expect set-pieces will be an area that England will look to expose Zinsberger, with the likes of White, Hemp and Mead ready to send goalward anything left in and around the box.
England vs Austria Betting Predictions
I can foresee the Lionesses maintaining their 100% win record against Austria and extending that streak to eight games. I think it will be a reasonably comfortable night at Old Trafford and that we send a message out to the rest of the competing nations.
Beth Mead has been in fine goalscoring form for the national side with 14 goals in her last 14 games, so I expect she could have a major part to play on Wednesday night.
- England to score both halves - 8/11 bet365
- Beth Mead to score anytime - 7/5 Paddy Power
- Beth Mead to score anytime and England to win 3-0 - 10/1 bet365
