Dutch Grand Prix: Leclerc to Make a Proper Charlie Once Again?

Charles Leclerc has finished on the podium in just one of his past nine Formula 1 starts. On that basis how could you really fancy him for this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix this weekend?

There’s been no end of excuses for his long list of bad results which underlines the facts – something always seems to go wrong for him and his Ferrari team.

The Monégasque driver is 4/7 to make a podium ahead of this weekend’s qualifying and that means he can doubtlessly be laid on the Betfair Exchange at around 8/11. In the scheme of things, what a great bet that looks.

Leclerc has not been pulling up any trees and we expect another non-Podium finish

At 8/11 a £10 'lay bet' on the Betfair exchange would return £10 profit less commission for a £7.30 risk.

Safety Car is a Safe Play

The Zandvoort Circuit that stages the Dutch Grand Prix returned to the F1 calendar last year and, in watching the replay from that race, it is truly remarkable that a safety car was not called into play.

The track is very narrow, there are gravel traps and banked bends that see cars race side-by-side. In 2022, we have new stewards that seem very willing to call a Safety Car into play. Additionally, the new spec race cars could be far more prone to spinning at this venue.

This makes Paddy Power’s 1/2 about a Safety Car being used an attractive bet. Throw in the latest weather forecasts – which suggest the prospect of showers during the afternoon – and it’s a gilt-edged investment.

And do keep a close eye on the weather forecast as rain on this relatively smooth surfaced track that often has sand blown on it from nearby dunes could result in carnage. At this point in time, we are very tempted about the 5/2 available about 15 or fewer race finishers.

The Pole Setter Should Not Be That Far Ahead

Ahead of the race, during Saturday’s qualifying, there’s an opportunity to back the margin between the fastest qualifier and the driver due to start second on the grid. Last week in Belgium, the margin between Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz was a whopping six-tenths of a second.

However, that track is enormous with long fast straights. It is everything Zandvoort is not. A lap here is just 2.6 miles and very twisty. Historically short lap tracks tend to show only a small superiority between the best and slower cars.

Consequently, we cannot envisage another yawning gap between first and second in qualifying. And we suggest that bet365′s 15/8 quote on a qualifying superiority margin between 0.1 and 0.25 seconds is an overpriced proposition.
