F1 Betting: Canadian Grand Prix 2022 Preview & Betting Tips

The Canadian GP could see change in fortune for Leclerc

This weekend sees the return of the Canada Grand Prix for the first time since 2019, with Max Verstappen looking to further establish his position at the top of the standings.

The 2022 Canadian Grand Prix takes place at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal and once again, the Dutch driver Max Verstappen is the favourite to win the race with the leading online bookmakers with best odds of 19/20 with Unibet at the time of writing.

It’s worth noting that the “Wall of Champions”, the final chicane on the circuit, has accounted for the likes of Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button down the years.

Even the very best drivers can find themselves getting a little too close to the barrier. With some long straights and heavy braking zones on the track, opportunities for overtaking should be plentiful.

Going into the race, the closest challenger to Verstappen for the drivers’ championship is now his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez. The Mexican can be backed at odds of 4/1 with Unibet to go one better and prevail in Montreal.

Perez finished second to Verstappen in the last race in Baku to leapfrog Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in the race to catch Verstappen.

Leclerc Fancied to Shine

Charles Leclerc is now 34 points adrift of Verstappen and, as we edge towards the midway point of the season, he goes into the race knowing that he could really do with a victory if he is to keep his title ambitions on track.

The Monacan driver is 3/1 with bet365 to secure the much-needed win, and that looks a reasonable price for a driver who hasn’t had a great deal of luck in recent races.

Mechanical issues have hampered Leclerc’s aspirations this season and he was forced to retire due to engine-related issues in Baku. He is surely due an upturn in his fortunes.

Perez Pole Value

Leclerc has claimed pole position in six of the eight races this season, including the last four. Even so, best available odds of 3/4 with Coral for him to do so again in Canada hold little appeal, even less so with rain being currently forecast to potentially affect Friday practice.

Perez, who was second on the grid in Azerbaijan, looks better value at best odds of 4/1 with BetVictor.

Hamilton for Podium

Lewis Hamilton might not be in contention for this year’s title, but he won the Canadian Grand Prix in 2019 and is tied with Michael Schumacher on seven for the most victories in the race.

That record and the support from the crowd makes Hamilton a decent punt at 5/1 with Coral to secure a Podium Finish.
