Back-to-back 1-2 finishes for the Red Bull team in 2023′s opening two races means the Formula 1 season already looks to have boring predictability about it. Betting giant bet365 has boosted the odds about Fernando Alonso in its “World Drivers’ Championship without Max Vetstappen” market. The Spaniard, with two-thirds in two starts, can now be backed at 7/2.
Verstappen is a prohibitive 1/5 to take a third successive World Drivers’ Championship, Perez is 10/1, and Alonso 12/1 in the same market. Unsurprisingly, Red Bull is 1/20 to win the constructors. …Did we mention the word ‘predictability’?
Commentators were quick to point to Perez’s wins on street circuits towards the latter stages of the Saudi Grand Prix two weeks ago - they suggested he is a better driver on this type of circuit. But form students will know his victories at Azerbaijan, Monaco, Singapore, and Saudi all came about courtesy of a large slice of misfortune to his teammate.
Perez is on the scoreboard for 2023, but bookmakers do not believe he will win many races on skill alone. Resultantly, the Mexican is even-money to win four or more races during the remainder of the season (21 races). Compare those odds to the 6/5 – on offer at bet365 – about Verstappen winning 15 or more races during the year!
Lewis Red Bull Link Is Unlikely
This Red Bull domination should see some generous prices for other drivers taking races. Not so. It is just 1/7 that Fernando Alonso wins a race in 2023. Charles Leclerc is 1/4 to score at some point, and his Ferrari teammate, Carlos Sainz, is 1/2.
Lewis Hamilton is 4/6 to win a race. It is quite remarkable given his amazing strike rate and former dominance of his Mercedes team. It is almost 16 months since Hamilton won a race and observers believe he is running out of patience and may be looking for a switch of teams for 2024.
But, with Red Bull seemingly being the car most likely to give him a shot at an eighth world championship, retirement could be on the cards. Regardless of statements from Christian Horner on Sky News, there is no way Verstappen or Red Bull kingpin, Helmut Marko, would allow the Brit to don blue overalls.
Take Mercedes in a Ferrari Match
Is there a possibility of green shoots of a Mercedes recovery appearing during 2023?
Team boss Toto Wolff believes there is. If he is right, the even-money currently available about the German team finishing ahead of Ferrari in the World Constructors’ Championship is a fair proposition.
Last year Mercedes improved throughout the year and Ferrari, after a bright start, regressed. At present, Hamilton’s team has 38 world championship points, while Ferrari has garnered 26.
