Modern television techniques did a lot to enhance the Bahrain Grand Prix. But take away the excitement of Fernando Alonso taking third – and only his second podium finish in eight years – the race was not that entertaining.

Max Verstappen led from the outset, and lap after lap he pulled further and further clear of his teammate, Sergio Perez. The Mexican once again showed he is massively outclassed by his garage mate. But, such is the advantage his Red Bull car has over its rivals, he did maintain the second place from which he started the race.

Moving forward, from a punting perspective, bets such as ‘Verstappen’s winning margin’ will be about the only thing that will hold any appeal. Until the cars return to Europe – race six on May 19 in Italy – surely only mechanical failure will prevent Verstappen from streaking off into the distance race weekend after race weekend.

The dutchman is already priced 1/4 to win the 2023 World Drivers’ Championship and best odds of 8/15 with BetVictor to win the next race – in Saudi Arabia this weekend. Thankfully ‘betting without the favorite’ markets are sure to appear, and these should provide opportunities as Hamilton, Alonso, and Leclerc should be able to use their skill to race Perez despite that driver’s faster car.

The Fastest Lap Market Could Be Back as a Betting Option

Another market that could remain alive and fruitful in 2023 is the ‘Fastest Lap’ betting. Since Formula 1 rules were changed (in 2019) to give the driver that claims the fastest lap of a race an extra world championship point – providing they finish in the top 10 – the distinction has gone to a Red Bull, Mercedes, or Ferrari driver 84% of the time.

But in Bahrain’s curtain-raising Grand Prix, it was Zhou Guanyu that claimed the fastest lap of the race. The Chinese driver only finished 16th. And so, this 150/1 result gives punters cause for optimism moving forwards.
