It’s all Change at Slow Hungary Where Anything is Possible

The Hungaroring has long been referred to as, “Monaco without walls”. A dated racetrack where overtaking was virtually impossible meant the timing of pit stops was vital at the Hungarian Grand Prix. During the 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix, there was not a single on-track overtake after the opening lap.

But Formula 1 changed the design of the cars for the 2022 season in a bid to create closer wheel-to-wheel racing by reducing the impact of dirty air that lessens downforce when following rivals. It was achieved by redesigning the shape of the front and rear wings, removing bargeboards, and reintroducing ground effect-style aerodynamics.

The changes have worked, and there were 30% more overtakes in 2022 than in the previous season. Last year, the Hungarian Grand Prix boasted 65 overtakes – a massive improvement on the corresponding race a decade earlier!

Drivers no longer need to make ambitious lunges in an attempt to overtake here. A tight, twisty, and bumpy ride this track may be, but finishing numbers have been high at this circuit in recent times. 19 cars were classified as finishers in 2019 and 2020. Last year every driver completed the race.

Little surprise to learn our first bet selection is 19 or more race finishers. This outcome on offer at best odds of 7/4 with bet365.

Ocon - King of the Slow Lap

Due to its nature as a high-downforce track, the Hungaroring has one of the lowest top speeds of the season. Cars and drivers only go straight for about ten seconds during the course of a fast lap. They spend the remaining 65 seconds or so cornering!

This is also the case at Monaco – where overtaking remains virtually impossible – and this season, Alpine’s Esteban Ocon delivered a stunning third-place effort at the venue. There is no good reason to believe he will not perform equally as well on Sunday afternoon. (Lights out at 2pm)

A top-three could be a big ask - with Red Bull looking invincible, Aston Martin very quick on high-downforce circuits, and McLaren a dramatically improved car following recent upgrades. But a top-6 finish at 8/1 with Boylesports… it’s a great bet for us!

Verstappen to Fall Short in Fastest Lap Stakes

The race strategy in Hungary is often on the borderline between a one-stop and a two-stop race. If the tyres ‘fall off a cliff’ towards the end of a stint, the driver can suddenly lose an enormous amount of time.

So, what will Max Verstappen do?

Appreciating the 4/11 favourite has claimed five successive pole positions and won six consecutive races, it is not difficult to envisage him dominating this race from the front.

Clean air and the lack of ‘racing’ will preserve his tyres and lessen the need for an unwelcome second pitstop. Whoever claims the fastest lap on Sunday – and the race winner has not done so at this race since Kimi Raikkonen in 2005 – will have almost certainly taken two pitstops.

As Verstappen is trading at short odds in this market, we are playing a few big-price selections in this one: Sergio Perez, Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, and Lance Stroll.
