Formula One: Singapore Grand Prix Preview & Betting Tips

Max Value in Looking Beyond Verstappen on Sunday

All eyes will be on Max Verstappen this Sunday. The Dutchman could possibly become the 2022 World Champion at the Singapore Grand Prix, but a lot of luck is needed. It includes Charles Leclerc finishing well down the field and Sergio Perez not finishing on the podium.

So, while the Red Bull driver will be the centre of attention and punters continue to pour money on the 31-time winner, why not consider the chances of both Mercedes drivers under the floodlights the Marina Bay Street Circuit as the Singapore GP makes its long-awaited return.

Russell & Hamilton to get in the mix

Well beaten off by both Red Bull and Ferrari at the start of the season, the silver cars have gradually improved throughout the year and are now more competitive than at any part of 2022.

Vitally their best form has come recently at high downforce tracks. Holland and Hungary yielded second-placed finishes that could have nearly been gold medals. With Singapore requiring the same car set-up as these venues, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton could be right in the mix.

Russell has finished on the podium in four of his last five starts. So just how and why he is 6/4 (with Coral) to do so again on Sunday is a mystery. A blind squirrel has found a nut here, so it is best to embrace this nugget and take advantage of this generous price without asking any questions.

Will Mercedes play Lewis late this time?

Lewis Hamilton can be backed at even-money for a podium finish. That price seems in line with that outcome’s probability. But surely, he is over-priced at 9/1 with Betfair Sportsbook to take the fastest lap of the race.

Mercedes know they will be competitive at this venue, and they nearly won the Dutch Grand Prix by employing a contra strategy with Lewis Hamilton – he was the victim of a late safety car that scuppered his ‘go long on tyres’ policy.

The team is sure to roll the dice again here and this time it could mean a pitstop and fresh tyres for the Brit late into the race. This is, of course, the stage of the race when the fastest laps are set and this new rubber is vital to any driver’s chances of taking the distinction.
