Stewards’ Cup Betting Tips

This year’s Stewards Cup race is set to take place on Saturday 5th August at it’s usual venue of Goodwood. The Stewards Cup is a flat handicap horse race open to horses aged three years or older and is run over a distance of 6 furlongs. The race was previously ran on the opening day of the five-day Glorious Goodwood meeting, however it was moved to the final day of the festival in 1993. The event has a fantastic £60,000 prize money on offer to the winner this year.

Over the last ten years of the Stewards Cup, we have seen four favourites triumph, including the last two winners Dancing Star and Magical Memory. One 2nd favourite has been victorious – Intrinsic in 2014, which won at 6/1, the same price as Magical Memory. With regards to the other six winners, the range of odds starts at 9/1 with most bookmakers and goes out as far as 40/1.

Six of the last ten winners have been aged four or below, with two aged six, two aged five, four aged four and two aged three. Looking at this criteria, a four year old is the ideal age for a horse to win the Stewards Cup. Other ideal factors for a Stewards Cup winner are that they have three or more previous runs in the season, they have three previous career wins to their name, they won 6f races in the past and they have raced at Goodwood previously.

Step forward Raucous, William Haggas’s four year old who finished up in third place behind fantastic winner Dancing Star in this race last year. With 15 runs to his name, this bay gelding has three victories, of which two were at a distance of 6f, along with six third place finishes. Raucous’s last win came under Ryan Moore at Chelmsford back in April, his first run of the season. In two of his next three runs, he has finished up in fourth place, while earning a credible-yet-disappointing eighth place at the Wokingham stakes at Ascot in June.

Two of the last ten winners, Rex Imperator in 2013 and Conquest in 2008, have been William Haggas trained horses, to make Raucous that bit more appealing. Raucous usually runs his best at 6f and is a proven competitor at an ideal peak for this contest. With an experienced jockey on board, we believe William Haggas’s gelding can win this explosive race at a fantastic price of 16/1.
