The Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at 3.15pm is the highlight on the second day of Chester’s May meeting. We will provide a Horse Racing tip, preview and prediction for the one mile five and a half furlong contest, named in honour of one one the greatest horses of the 19th century.
We will also supply Horse Racing tips for the opening 5f sprint handicap at 1.45pm along with the Listed one mile two and a half furlong Dee Stakes at 2.15pm. All three races will be shown live on ITV4.
Our Tip for the 1.45pm at Chester:
The allocation of stall 1 for the front-running Jabbarockie could hardly have worked out any better for the Eric Alston-trained eight-year-old in this sprint handicap run over the minimum trip.
The winner of eight of his thirty five starts is sure to take some pegging back in the hands of Harrison Shaw, a situation reflected in the gelding’s odds of 11/4. But, at much bigger odds, it is the horse drawn in stall 3, Copper Knight, who makes more appeal off a mark some 17lb lower than when just touched off by fellow rival Makanah in a 12-runner handicap at Newmarket on his first run of 2020 last June.
The mount of James Sullivan enjoys a pull of 24lb with that horse and with two course and distance victories to his name, the son of Sir Prancealot has been given a great chance by the handicapper to get back to winning ways with conditions to suit.
Our Tip for the 2.15pm at Chester:
The last horse to win this Derby trial before going on to victory at Epsom was Kris Kin back in 2003, a statistic which is likely to remain the case following this year’s renewal.
The Charlie Appleby-trained Yibir, and Ontario from the powerful Ballydoyle stable of Aidan O’Brien, head the betting. But both handlers surely have more credible challengers waiting in the wings as potential winners of the world’s most famous Flat race.
After winning his maiden at Galway last August, Ontario was found wanting on his last four starts as a juvenile, despite not being disgraced, and his reappearance third to Tactical in Newmarket’s Free Handicap received a boost when the runner-up, Native Crown, ran a stormer to be fourth in Saturday’s 2000 Guineas.
Maximal and Foxes Tales both have the potential to improve upon what they have achieved to date. But it is the Godolphin-owned Yibir who holds the strongest claims. The winner of his last two races as a juvenile, the Dubawi colt only gave best to winner Alenquer and stablemate Adayar late on in Sandown’s Classic Trial last month, a repeat of which should be good enough to take this.
Our Tip for the 3.15pm at Chester:
Hard to know what to expect from the 2019 Investec Derby third Japan following what can only be described as a disappointing season in 2020. On his day, the mount of Ryan Moore would be confidently expected to take this Group 3 contest. But until the Aidan O’Brien-trained son of Galileo shows signs of returning to something like his best, he is worth opposing at a short price.
Trueshan was a big improver towards the end of last season and on paper Hollie Doyle’s mount looks the main danger. But at a big price the Hughie Morrison-trained Kipps could prove the each-way value bet of the race.
The four-year-old was a model of consistency in some competitive handicaps last season before stepping up into group company. However, the mount of William Buick could never get into a challenging position at Group 3 level over 1m 4f at Newbury on his final start of 2020 and back at the Berkshire track on his reappearance last month.
The son of War Command, on a mark of 93, may be the lowest rated runner in the race but looks the type to be suited by this unique track, and on his first try over an extended 1m 5f trip is fancied to outrun his big odds.
