Newbury’s Ladbrokes Trophy meeting gets underway on Friday afternoon with ITV cameras due to show four contests on the seven-race card. We will provide Horse Racing tips, previews and predictions for the final three races, starting with a 2m 4f handicap chase at 2.25pm.
The feature race of the day, the 3m Grade 2 Ladbrokes Long Distance Hurdle takes place at 3.00pm, followed by a 3m finale at 3.35pm, the Class 2 Play Ladbrokes 1-2-Free On Football Handicap Hurdle.
Our Tip for the 2.25pm at Newbury:
The Venetia Williams stable is starting to hit a bit of form at the moment and this looks a good opportunity for her top weight Fanion D’Estruval to open his account for the season.
The ex French-trained gelding has a touch of class about him, as was evident when just failing to make his mark in Graded company last season against the likes of First Flow, Champ and Allaho.
The mount of Charlie Deutsch should strip fitter following his reappearance run when fourth in Aintree’s Old Roan Chase and despite having to concede weight all round, is fancied to outclass his rivals with conditions to suit.
Of those at a bigger price, the Paul Nicholls-trained Amour Du Nuit and jockey Bryony Frost can make the frame.
Our Tip for the 3.00pm at Newbury:
With a field of only six runners and no guaranteed pace up front, this Grade 2 Stayers’ Hurdle trial is unlikely to be run to suit the Emma Lavelle-trained Paisley Park and jockey Aidan Coleman.
On The Blind Side. Lisnagar Oscar and Thomas Derby are all capable of taking a hand in the finish on their best form. But the horses to concentrate on are the two mares, Indefatigable and Mrs Milner, especially with their handy sex allowance.
The former has already won one decent stamina contest this season, Wetherby’s West Yorkshire Hurdle, and looks sure to make a bold bid in an effort to follow up last month’s impressive victory. But once again this could be another prize which ends up going across the Irish sea, courtesy of the Paul Nolan-trained Mrs Milner.
The mount of Brian Cooper takes a big step up in class here after mainly competing in handicap company, as was the case when, in receipt of 15lb, the daughter of Flemensfirth had to settle for second place, a neck behind fellow rival On The Blind Side at Cheltenham 12 months ago.
Mrs Milner left that form well behind later in the season however, running away with the Pertemps Final at the festival by five lengths. A comfortable winner of a Listed Race at Limerick on her reappearance last month, the six-year-old is fancied to make the transition into Graded company with a victory at the Berkshire racecourse.
Our Tip for the 3.55pm at Newbury:
Runner-up to the Paul Nicholls-trained Take Your Time at Ffos Las last month with the third horse some 26 lengths away, time may show that attempting to give that horse 2lb was a serious ask for the seven-year-old Eyeofthescorpion from the bang-in-form stable of Fergal O’Brien.
The mount of Paddy Brennan travelled supremely well in the rear for most of that 3m contest, until unable to match the pace of the winner on the run to the line. Running off the same mark of 122 here, the Scorpion gelding is fancied to gain some compensation with a third victory over the smaller obstacle.
With 14 rivals to contend with, the selection will not have things all his own way however as stablemate Polish and the lightly-weighted Certainly Red are just two of several potential dangers.
