Horse Racing Tip: 2021 Melbourne Cup

If the betting proves to be any guide, the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup looks at the mercy of hot favourite (as short as 6/4) Incentivise, unbeaten in all four starts, the latest being an easy victory in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup two weeks ago.

While there is little doubt the Peter Moody-trained five-year-old is the one to beat, the son of Shamus Award will be racing over a distance some four furlongs further than he has yet travelled and at a short price is worth taking on with British raider Spanish Mission from the Andrew Balding stable.

Our Tip for the 2021 Melbourne Cup:

The mount of Craig Williams (won the race aboard Vow And Declare in 2019) has a similar profile to last year’s winner Twilight Payment (who will attempt to become the first back-to-back victor since Makybe Diva’s hat-trick of wins in 2003/4/5) and is set to receive a handy 2lb from Joseph O’Brien’s charge.

An easy winner of York’s Group 2 Yorkshire Cup back in May, Spanish Mission went on to run a fine race in the Ascot Gold Cup behind Subjectivist, beaten five and a half lengths, before going down narrowly to Stradivarius in the Lonsdale Cup back on York’s Knavesmire.

This trip of two mile is probably perfect for the British challenger who, along with having an ideal preparation, is possibly the classiest contender for ‘the race that stops a nation.’ At a double-figure price, the ex Richard Hannon-trained Floating Artist is the other one to consider with course form to his name and a featherweight of 7st 12lb to carry.
