Charlie McCann's Horse Racing Tips for Carlisle & Plumpton on Monday

Houston Texas to defy 8lbs rise at Carlisle

Soft ground at Carlisle for their seven-race card and the Irish raider Rightplacerighttime has been put in very short – 5/4 with William Hill – for the extended 3m 2f handicap chase given his best form is on better ground despite a maiden hurdle success on soft ground.

Behindthelines only got as far as the first in a marathon test at Bangor-on-Dee last time but there was plenty of money for him and he could be the biggest danger to Houston Texas (1.35pm Carlisle) who has been raised 8lbs for scoring here over three miles earlier in the month. He might be up to defying the rise given he looks have improved for the switch to fences and a move to the stable of Nicky Richards.

A winner between the flags in his native Ireland the selection has run poorly on heavy ground which should be noted but he only carries 10st 3lbs and that might prove pivotal from two out.

Recommendation: Houston Texas (1.35pm Carlisle) @ 7/2 with bet365

Sunset West has McCain chasing newcomer to beat

Sunset West (4.30pm Carlisle) was beaten out of sight over 3m at Uttoxeter last time over hurdles on desperate ground when backed – and not just by me – as if defeat were out of the question. He drops back in distance by half-a-mile this afternoon and he jumped right when third at Ayr on his penultimate start and chase debut.

Jockey Tommy Dowson suggested his mount was too keen at Uttoxeter last time although I didn’t think that was the case. A winner between the flags in his native Ireland he is better than he showed in Staffordshire which was his first start for over ten weeks. There should be no excuses this afternoon.

Tim Pat makes his chase debut for Donald McCain, and he has the size and scope for the larger obstacles, and he comes into the race on the back of a win at Bangor from a 5lbs lower mark. He represents a big danger for such an inform yard. This promises to be a most informative contest.

Recommendation: Sunset West (4.30pm Carlisle) @ 3/1 with bet365

More to come from JP’s Rock On Rita at Plumpton

Over to Plumpton and the form of Rock On Rita’s (4.10pm Plumpton) Ffos Las win on soft ground – not good to soft as per official description – at the beginning of the month has been let down on more than one occasion but she gets a confident vote. Aidan Coleman goes to Plumpton for just the one ride – albeit for JP McManus – and I thought there was more to come from her when she scored in south Wales last time.

Recommendation: Rock On Rita (4.10pm Plumpton) @ 6/4 with William Hill
