The Best Horse Racing Tips for Doncaster, Newbury & Cheltenham

Some excellent racing is in store under both codes on Saturday afternoon, in particular from the Flat meetings at Doncaster and Newbury together with a great Jumps card at Cheltenham.

We will provide Horse Racing tips, previews and predictions for one race at each of these meetings, Cheltenham’s 3m 1f handicap chase at 2.20pm, Newbury’s St Simon Stakes, a Group 3 contest run over 1m 4f at 2.35pm, and finally at 4.20pm Doncaster’s Virgin Bet Handicap, run over the minimum trip of 5f.

Our Tip for the 2.20pm at Cheltenham:

Cloth Cap was one of the most improved chasers in training last season, winning the Ladbroke Trophy by ten lengths. The Jonjo O’Neill-trained nine-year-old ended the campaign as 11/2 favourite for the Grand National but, after travelling well for most of the race, was eventually pulled-up with a breathing problem.

Racing off a 20lb higher mark than at Newbury, Tom Scudamore’s mount is going to find life tough in handicaps in the months ahead and may be better off competing off level weights in Graded company. This valuable 3m 1f contest is likely to be won by something further down the handicap, with the two Irish challengers, Definite Plan and Go Another One, together with northern raider Cool Mix making most appeal, with preference for the Iain Jardine-trained grey gelding.

Conor O’Farrell’s mount is at his best on decent ground and despite running a fine race to finish fifth in the Scottish Grand National back in April, almost certainly found that 4m stamina test beyond his capabilities, as that was more than a mile further than the son of Fair Mix had previously raced over.

Running off a mark 1lb lower than at Ayr, on his favoured good ground and over a trip should suit, Cool Mix is fancied to run a big race.

Our Tip for the 2.35pm at Newbury:

The Godolphin runner Siskany is likely to go off a short price for this Group 3 contest and while the Dubawi gelding has form on soft ground the mount of James Doyle is worth taking on with conditions at the Berkshire racecourse testing to say the least.

While the Ralph Beckett-trained Max Vega enjoys plenty of give in the ground, the one horse who seems to reserve his best for very soft going is Morando who can prove the value bet of the race in the hands of Silvestre De Sousa.

The eight-year-old has not had his conditions of late but back on heavy ground the grey, who took the scalp of Kew Gardens in the 2019 Ormonde Stakes by eight lengths, is capable of beating some better fancied rivals.

Our Tip for the 4.20pm at Doncaster:

Despite racing from 4lb out of the handicap, improving sprinter Raasel makes plenty of appeal in this five furlong handicap, a victory which would take the four-year-old’s turf record to five wins from six starts.

The son of Showcasing has won his last three starts, all within the space of three weeks, and while the gelding never wins by too far, Raasel has only gone up 8lb since kicking off the hat-trick at Goodwood last month.

The booking of talented 5lb claimer Adam Farragher for Michael Appleby’s charge means that the selection will be carrying only 7st 11lb and off his featherweight his winning run is expected to continue.
