The Best Horse Racing Tips for Newcastle, Newmarket & Curragh

A busy Saturday of Flat Horse Racing action with meetings taking place at Newcastle, Newmarket, Chester, Windsor and Doncaster along with the Curragh’s Irish Derby card.

We will provide Horse Racing tips, previews and predictions for Newcastle’s feature race, the extended 2m William Hill Northumberland Plate at 3.30pm, together with Newmarket’s Group 3 Close Brothers Criterion Stakes at 3.15pm and finally the 1m 4f Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at 3.45pm from the Curragh.

Our Tip for the 3.15pm at Newmarket:

The 114-rated Kinross sets the standard for this Group 3 contest following the mount of Hollie Doyle’s victory in Haydock’s John Of Gaunt Stakes last month. The Kingman gelding is not the most consistent of performers however and has to concede weight to all of his 10 rivals.

Glorious Journey, Lord Of The Lodge and the unexposed Tinker Toy will have their supporters. But with conditions to suit, it could pay to side with one of Richard Hannon’s two runners, Motakhayyel.

The son of Heeraat is unbeaten in two starts at headquarters, including an easy victory in the ultra-competitive Bunbury Cup over course and distance last July.

The mount of Dane O’Neill looked as if he would come on for the run when runner-up to Toro Strike in a Conditions Stakes at Thirsk on his reappearance before failing to show his best in Ascot’s Victoria Cup on soft ground and with a big weight of 9st 11lb to carry.

There should be no excuses for the five-year-old on this occasion and makes plenty of each-way appeal at a double-figure price.

Our Tip for the 3.30pm at Newcastle:

One of the unluckiest horses at Royal Ascot last week was undoubtedly the Charlie Fellowes-trained Dubious Affair who, granted a clear passage in the closing stages, would surely have won the 1m 6f Copper Horse Handicap on the opening day instead of going down by a head.

The five-year-old daughter of Frankel has been raised 4lb for that effort (runs off old mark here) and is fancied to gain ample compensation by taking this famous handicap, known locally as the ‘Pitmen’s Derby,’ in the hands of Jamie Spencer.

The mare has made great strides since joining Fellowes from Sir Michael Stoute last May, winning her first three starts before stepping into Graded company at Newmarket and Doncaster. Not disgraced in either of those races, Dubious Affair’s final run of the season can be forgiven as she failed to handle the soft ground at Ascot on Champions Day.

The selection could be even better over this trip and with form on an all-weather surface makes plenty of appeal. Top weight Trueshan will need a herculean effort if Alan King’s charge is to defy the massive burden of 9st 13lb (including rider’s 5lb claim). A more dangerous rival may come from further down the handicap in the shape of Rajinsky.

The mount of Tom Eaves didn’t get the run of the race when seventh last year and can improve upon that position following a couple of decent performances this season.

Our Tip for the 3.45pm at Curragh:

The Epsom Derby form is put to the test here with the second and third horses home, Mojo Star and Hurricane Lane, renewing rivalry. It may be that the most famous Flat race in the world was only average this year and it would be no surprise to see a horse who was a late withdrawal for the great race, Lone Eagle, prove best of the British challengers.

However, it is likely to be a case of normal service being resumed for the Ballydoyle stable of Aidan O’Brien who will be attempting to win the Classic for a hard-to-believe 15th time.

The stable’s number one hope, High Definition, is expected to have the race run to bring his stamina into play with a possible two pacemakers up front in Matchless and Arturo Toscanini.

Those tactics would also suit Wordsworth, a potential Cup horse of the future, and at around odds of 20/1 the mount of Seamie Heffernan, who will be trying to win the race for a fifth time, could well surprise his better fancied stablemate.

The son of Galileo has looked green in all of his three starts this season and like many Ballydoyle inmates has improved with each race. And on a track where stamina is at a premium, Wordsworth is fancied to make the frame at the very least.
