The Best Horse Racing Tips for Carlisle on Thursday

At a time in the year when the going at most British racecourses usually ranges from soft to heavy, Thursday’s two jump meetings, at Wincanton and Carlisle, are expected to be run on good to firm ground. Unsurprisingly, this has resulted in smaller fields than would normally be the case.

However, the Cumbrian track stages an interesting eight-race card with today’s Horse Racing tips, previews and predictions coming in the races taking place at 1.55pm, 3.40pm and 4.50pm.

Our Tip for the 1.55pm at Carlisle:

Unusually, the two horses at the head of the handicap, Arvico Bleu and Fusain, are having their first run for their respective trainers since leaving the Irish stable of Henry De Bromhead in the last week or so. While both horses have shown plenty of previous ability, a watching brief is advised on this occasion.

The in-form Slanelough is on a hat-trick here following wins at Ayr and Perth but it is another ex Irish recruit who looks the one to beat in the shape of the Iain Jardine-trained Gold Des Bois.

Previously in the care of Gordon Elliott and latterly Denise Foster, the seven-year-old is lightly-raced over fences, winning one of his four starts, beating fellow rival Arvico Bleu as it turns out at Ballinrobe back in May.

The fact that Conor O’Farrell’s mount is now 6lb better off with that horse and has had the benefit of a run in this country when second at Kelso just over a week ago, puts the ball firmly in the court of the Full Of Gold gelding who is due to go up 7lb in the future.

Our Tip for the 3.40pm at Carlisle:

Near Kettering landed a bit of a gamble when winning on his last start over hurdles at Market Rasen in August. The Sam England-trained gelding has been well beaten in three runs on the Flat since then however and has gone up 10lb over the smaller obstacles. Strong Team has been in good form of late and should go well again but it could pay to take a chance on course and distance winner Old Jewry.

The mount of Ross Chapman’s course form reads 3-1-2, all over today’s distance and while well beaten on his reappearance at Perth last month, that was the seven-year-old’s first outing in four months. The son of Le Fou should strip much fitter here and on a course that clearly suits can make the frame at the very least.

Our Tip for the 4.50pm at Carlisle:

This two mile handicap chase looks to rest between the Donald McCain-trained Armattiekan and Sword Of Fate from the Leonard Kerr stable, with preference for the latter.

The Beneficial gelding has been kept on the go in 2021, as this will be the eight-year-old’s eighteenth start of the year, a campaign which has resulted in three victories, the most recent when running out the easy winner of a similar contest at Perth last month.

The mount of Derek Fox has gone up 6lb for that victory but in a race which should take little winning is fancied to defy this higher mark if in the same kind of form. The one horse who looks capable of making life difficult for Sword Of Fate is the Brian Hughes-ridden Armattiekan.

The seven-year-old runs off the same mark as when registering his last win, at Market Rasen back in April, and despite one or two moderate efforts since then is more than capable of bouncing back.
