Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting gets underway on Thursday afternoon, the feature race being the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at 2.45pm. We will provide a Horse Racing tip, preview and prediction for this 7f juvenile contest together with two other races on the card.
Our first Horse Racing tip of the day comes in the 6f Class 2 fillies’ handicap at 2.10pm, while our each-way longshot runs in the 4.30pm race, the 1m Come And Discover Newmarket Handicap.
Our Tip for the 2.10pm at Newmarket:
A tight fillies’ handicap in which many of the eight runners have faced each other already this season. Best at the weights is probably the Stuart Williams-trained Gellhorn, but the only three-year-old in the race, Lovely Breeze, has more scope for improvement and the consistent daughter of Sepoy is taken to come out on top.
The only time the filly finished outside of the first two in her last six starts was when stepping up to Listed company at Pontefract last month. That was probably a step too far for Lovely Breeze at this stage of her career in finishing sixth of the 12 runners.
That was still a fair effort however and with the ground expected to ride on the easy side at headquarters, the mount of James Doyle is fancied to record her third win of the season at the main expense of Quickstep Lady.
Our Tip for the 2.45pm at Newmarket:
Only seven runners for this Group 3 juvenile contest but a fascinating race all the same. Godolphin’s Modern Games was an impressive winner of a nursery at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting prior to finishing second to fellow rival Crest, who was making his debut, in a Leicester novice stakes last month.
The Andrew Balding-trained Harrow has been in great form of late, including when winning a valuable Doncaster sales race last time, and looks ready for the step-up into Group company while Claim The Crown, Ribhi and Ring of Beara have all shown plenty of promise.
The one to beat however is French raider Trident, trained by the great Andre Fabre. The maestro rarely leaves Newmarket empty handed when sending one of his juveniles over and in this son of Wootton Bassett he looks to have another potential Group 1 horse on his hands.
An easy winner on his debut at Longchamp, the mount of Michael Barzalona had the likes of Armor, Asymmetric and Gubbass behind when second to Perfect Power in the Group 1 Prix Morny last time, form which looks good enough to see off the home defence on this occasion.
Our Tip for the 4.30pm at Newmarket:
An easy winner of a novice stakes at Sandown last season on just her second career start (runner-up went on to achieve a rating of 87), the David Menuisier-trained Shouldering has failed to repeat anything like that form in five runs this season, mainly due to the fact that the daughter of Epaulette has been far too keen in the early stages of her races.
The booking of jockey Jamie Spencer for the first time takes the eye on the filly as the pair look an ideal partnership. Providing the talented hold-up rider can settle his mount, the unexposed Shouldering looks potentially well treated on a mark of 77.
The hat-trick-seeking Bake and Carolus Magnus look the two to beat.
