Alan Kelly's Horse Racing Tips for Doncaster & Ludlow on Wednesday

Hopefully, all three jumps meetings due to take place on Wednesday afternoon, Doncaster and Ludlow in Britain and Punchestown in Ireland, go ahead as planned with another week of unsettled weather forecast.

While small fields are the order of the day at the Town Moor racecourse, we will provide Horse Racing tips, previews and predictions for two of the races on the card along with one value each-way longshot from the Shropshire track.

“Tip of the Day” – Half Track – 4.00pm Doncaster

On his first run in a handicap, the Nick Alexander-trained six-year-old should take plenty of beating in this extended 3m hurdle off a mark of only 115.

Chirico Vallis (Next Best) – 3.25pm Doncaster

Despite a field of only six runners there are plenty of old favourites in this veterans’ chase, including last season’s Cheltenham Festival scorer Vintage Clouds and Scottish Grand National runner-up Dingo Dollar.

Both horses may have to play a minor role on this occasion however behind the Neil Mulholland-trained Chirico Vallis.

The JP McManus-owned gelding produced his best performance over fences when making all of the running to win a competitive 13-runner handicap at Chepstow last October before stepping-up in trip against some talented stayers in  Warwick’s Classic Chase last month.

Always prominent, the mount of Richie McLernon’s stamina gave out over the last couple of fences in that 3m 5f marathon. A return to this distance of 3m should prove perfect for the 10-year-old who looks more than capable of winning this handicap off a mark of 135.

Road To Rome (Longshot) – 3.35pm Ludlow

On his first start for trainer Peter Bowen, Road To Rome, a decent hunter chaser of a couple of years ago, would have a great chance of taking this amateur riders contest off a mark of only 123 if able to produce anything like his best form on the 12-year-old’s first start for a year.

After raking up seven straight wins in point-to-points and hunter chases, the son of sprinter Choisir finished fourth and fifth respectively in the Cheltenham and Aintree Foxhunters of 2019, earning a rating of 139 before having to miss almost two years through injury.

Returning to action at Wetherby 12 months ago, Road To Rome failed to show his form and has not been seen since. Providing his new handler, who does so well with this type of horse, can produce the talented chaser fit and well, the mount of 5lb claiming  amateur Toby Wynne could be thrown-in off his current mark.

Of the opposition, top weight Slate House, I K Brunel and Via Dolorosa are feared most.

Half Track (NAP) – 4.00pm Doncaster

This looks a good opportunity for the Nick Alexander-trained Half Track to follow up his Ayr victory over the promising Nells Son of just before Christmas on the gelding’s fourth start over hurdles.

The mount of Sean Quinlan has improved with each outing over the smaller obstacles, most recently when running out a half length winner at the Scottish track. An opening handicap mark of 115 looks more than reasonable for a race that shouldn’t take too much winning.

The Fame And Glory gelding receives weight from all but one of his five rivals, the most dangerous of which looks to be last month’s Catterick runner-up Gredin, the mount of champion jockey elect Brian Hughes.
