Horse Racing tips for the jump meetings at Musselburgh & Lingfield on Monday

A quiet start to the week, the afternoon action coming from the two jump meetings at Musselburgh and Lingfield. No reason to complain, however, following a fabulous weekend of jump racing, the highlight of which was the Tingle Creek victory of Edwardstone, now a top price 7/2 for the Queen Mother Champion Chase behind 6/4 favourite Energumene, although personally, I would have the pair joint market leaders at around 9/4.

Last week produced a profit of £23.91, although it was a case of what might have been as 50/1 Saturday Aintree winner Romeo Brown was reluctantly passed over in favour of the third horse home Walking On Air. However, our overall profit since the beginning of September runs at £101.50 to a £1 level stake, so things could be a lot worse as we approach the end of the year.

2.40pm Musselburgh - Latino Fling (Nap of the Day)

In a race that should be run to suit, Donald McCain’s five-time winning hurdler can make it six, all of which came with champion jockey Brian Hughes in the saddle.

2.25pm Lingfield - Achille

After racing over trips in the region of 3m 2f to 4m 2f over the last three seasons, it is a little surprising to see trainer Venetia Williams drop her grey 12-year-old Achille down to 2m 4f for this conditional jockeys’ veterans’ handicap chase.

While the son of Dom Alco has some decent form over extreme distances, the mount of Shane Quinlan won races over less than 2m 4f in his native France, along with three victories for Williams over three miles in 2019.

Achille now runs off a mark some 16lb lower than when finishing fourth in last year’s Welsh Grand National and can open his account for the first time in over three and a half years. Irish point-to-point winner Stamp Your Feet is the other to consider on his first start for trainer Richard Mitford-Slade.

2.40pm Musselburgh - Latino Fling (Nap of the Day)

Champion jockey Brian Hughes must have a soft spot for Donald McCain’s seven-year-old mare Latino Fling, who has provided the leading rider with five victories to date, all of which came earlier this year, including over 2m 4f on this course back in March.

The daughter of Milan produced a rare poor effort in her most recent start when fourth of five in a Class 2 handicap at Kelso in September. The selection seemed ill-at-ease at the Borders track and is better judged on previous victories achieved at Sedgefield, Uttoxeter and Bangor.

This three-mile trip should pose no problems for the mare who is fancied to concede 4lb to main market rival Court Dreaming. Nicky Richards’ charge is better on stiff courses, as when passing four horses on the run-in in a chase at Carlisle last time and may be found wanting on a course that may not play to the gelding’s strengths.

3.10pm Musselburgh - Get With It (Next Best)

This Go North Red Rum Series Qualifier concerns the Ewan Whillans-trained Pitempton Power and Get With It from the Rose Dobbin stable, with a preference for the latter.

The Getaway gelding improved with each run since being sent over fences, winning races at Perth and Kelso before being sent off a warm 5/4 favourite at Newcastle last month. That market confidence was a little surprising, however, as the seven-year-old was dropping back to 2m 4f after recording those two wins over distances of 3m and two miles seven and a half furlongs.

Back over three miles and off a 1lb lower mark, the mount of Craig Nichol should prove hard to beat. Pitempton Power won the second of his two chase wins on this course on New Year’s Day and would be a big danger if coping with this step up in trip after running over much shorter.

3.25pm Lingfield - Eaton Miller (Longshot)

Trainer Ryan Potter is fast developing a reputation for the shrewd placing of his horses, along with the odd gamble or two. And despite racing from 5lb out of the handicap, his Eaton Miller is worth considering for this desperately weak Class 5 handicap chase.

The mount of Ben Poste joined Potter two years ago and, on his first four starts, won races at Uttoxeter (chase) and Warwick (hurdles), along with excellent place efforts at Taunton and Southwell. The 10-year-old failed to fire on both of his runs in November, but a reproduction of his second at Market Rasen back in May would put him bang in the mix for this modest contest. Top weight Echo Watt and 3lb claimer Lilly Pinchin is probably the one to beat.
