Pembroke to land hat-trick for Skeltons’ at Haydock

Haydock appears cautiously optimistic at the time of writing that today’s meeting, which includes four Grade 2s, will pass its 8am inspection.

Taunton less so, having brought forward their inspection to 4pm Friday after a severe frost on Thursday.

1.30pm Haydock - Pembroke (Nap of the Day)

Dan Skelton had four winners last Saturday, and he has a good chance with Lac Du Constance in the opener, but he is likely to be a short price in that three-runner contest.

PEMBROKE was a big disappointment at Chepstow on his hurdles debut but has left that form around with facile successes at Wetherby and Ludlow when he didn’t come out of second gear carrying a penalty.

That wasn’t a great contest, but the third has come out and won, and I will be disappointed if he doesn’t run a very big race. He doesn’t have an entry in the Supreme at Cheltenham but looks like the type who will be back in the northwest at Aintree if he comes through this test.

The unbeaten Chasing Fire has won his two starts over timber by an aggregate of thirty-two lengths. He can only beat what’s put in front of him, but he has to step up again to land this prize.

2.40pm Haydock - Bristol De Mai

The handicapper has certainly given BRISTOL DE MAI a chance, and the grey is taken to roll back the years and gain a seventh-course success. The selection is a three-time Betfair Chase winner and was awarded the Grand National Trial – second past the post - on the subsequent disqualification of the Ben Jones trained The Galloping Bear back in February.

The 12-year-old is 5lbs lower in the weights this afternoon and showed he was no back number when beaten 20L behind Protektorat in the Betfair here in November. He likes to race prominently but will certainly not get an easy lead with Blaklion and Dr Kananga in the field.

Dr Kananga went out like a light going to two out in the Becher Chase last time but was a most progressive staying chaser last term and could easily bounce back. The form of Fontaine Collonges’ C&D win from a 5lbs lower mark was franked by the Cheltenham win of the third, and she represents a huge danger and is a worthy market leader, but I hope there is one last hurrah in the top weight.

1.37pm Lingfield - Paris Lights

Ryan Moore has four rides at Lingfield, and I hope to see PARIS LIGHTS build on his C&D success in a Novice event just before Christmas in what was his first start for George Boughey.

That was a slowly run affair, but he hit the line hard and, as a full-brother to the classic/multiple Group 1 winner St Mark’s Basilica, he is open to further improvement after just six career starts and first on an all-weather surface. He was gelded after leaving Jessica Harrington in Ireland and fitted with a tongue tie for the first time here last month. The headgear is fitted again today.

The selection would not want the race to become tactical, but there is pace in the race. The return to 10f could suit dual course winner Obsidian Knight although he does not have the scope to improve of the lightly-raced Boughey 4-year-old.

2.47pm Lingfield - Al Agaila

AL AGAILA has been raised 11lbs for hosing up over C&D last time when he did us a big favour having been backed from 10/1 into 7/2 stepped up to ten furlongs for the first time under Luke Morris. Regular pilot James Doyle returns to the plate this afternoon, and this £100,000 handicap was immediately nominated as her next target. The second Makeinmedoit and third Tequillamockingbird are weighted to reverse the form, but I vowed last time to back the Crisford filly until she met with defeat, and I will not desert her although the layers are taking no chances, having had their fingers burnt last time. She is likely to drift from the opening 11/8.

The filly has a good draw in stall two and has the pace should the race become tactical, although the same could be said of Morgan Fairy, who won over a mile here last time from just a 2lbs lower mark.
