This was written before Plumpton’s 2pm inspection on Tuesday but it would be something of a surprise if the meeting thawed out in time. Might be best to concentrate on the all-weather action
1.40pm Wolverhampton - City Escape
Cicely did well to overcome a high draw to win over C&D last time in her first-time cheekpieces, but she is not certain to confirm the form with CITY ESCAPE on the revised terms. Note the selection beat the mare a neck over C&D here at the beginning of the month and is 6lbs better off at the weights.
City Escape was slowly away and met trouble in running last time under David Probert, and Billy Loughnane – who did us such a favour at Southwell on Monday – returns to the plate this afternoon. He has a good draw in stall two this afternoon, and if he can break better than has been the case in his last couple of starts, he will be very hard to beat.
2.40pm Wolverhampton - Trusty Scout
The Loughnane’s have the likely market leader in the extended mile handicap with Broughtons Flare, but there are reasons to think that TRUSTY SCOUT can reverse last week’s C&D form when the selection finished third, having met slight interference before coming wide down the straight. Broughtons Flame, meanwhile, got a dream run up the inside.
Daniel Muscutt takes over on Derek Shaw’s 5-year-old, who is ideally drawn in stall one today. The selection had, rather surprisingly, been running over distances short of a mile, given his sole win came over this trip at Hamilton, and he has run well up to twelve furlongs in the past. Granted a decent pace, he looks sure to run a big race and was backed from 50/1 overnight to 10/1 here last week.
3.15pm Wolverhampton - Georgio Vasari (Nap of the Day)
Fast Style will have his supporters under Tom Marquand carrying a 6lbs penalty for his recent Newcastle success, but I am keen to oppose and am sweet on the chance of GEORGIO VASARI.
The selection has been busy for Ivan Furtado since returning from a 230-day break to win over C&D at the beginning of December. He has not been out of the first three in four subsequent starts, and he was too keen and didn’t get the rub of the green when third here on his penultimate start.
He is slowly creeping up the weights and must be due a short break soon, but he is well drawn this afternoon and is due another 1lb rise from Saturday. Yes, he has been a beaten market leader in his last four starts, but I feel this is a very winnable race, although the lack of guaranteed pace somewhat muddies the waters.
