This should be a good weekend! Newbury’s Betfair Hurdle card comes to town and we should be spoiled with some top class action.

Let’s not forget Warwick either, where current Arkle market leader and unbeaten chaser Jonbon looks to lay down his marker for the big one at Cheltenham in just over four weeks time, by landing the Kingmaker Novice Chaser.

I am sticking with Warwick where my best bet on the card comes in the 3.48. HARTUR D’OUDAIRIES made a favourable impression when bolting up over C&D back in 2021, before finishing down the field at Cheltenham the following race.

He came back from a spell on the sidelines to finish runner up at Exeter last time out, but will be suited by this better ground and drop back in trip. He could take some beating for the Dan Skelton team.

Elsewhere on the card, I expect STOLEN SILVER to have too much class for his rivals and can defy his big weight burden in the opener.

The Sam Thomas trained gelding has been a little unlucky this season, unseating at Cheltenham in November’s Paddy Power Gold Cup, and then running a stormer back at Prestbury Park on New Year’s Day, when finishing second to Midnight River on ground that would have been softer than ideal for him. Underfoot conditions should be much quicker here and can see him to best effect.

2.25pm Newbury - Hitman

Over at Newbury, I think HITMAN can get back on the winning trail in the Denman Chase. Things didn’t go to plan when pulling-up in the King George, but can be forgiven that effort as he burst a blood vessel.

In receipt of 5lb from last year’s winner Eldorado Allen, the form of the Colin Tizzard yard would be a bit of a worry (1 winner from last 40 runners) whereas Hitman represents the red hit Paul Nicholls team.

3.35pm Newbury - Master Chewy

In the Betfair Hurdle my selection for the Antepost Armchair was DEERE MARK who slots in nicely towards the bottom of the weights, and the 20/1 selection looks a lively outsider.

I am adding a second string to my bow with horse number 18 out of 18 on the card, and that is the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained MASTER CHEWY who should be suited by this big field scenario and a strong pace on better ground.

He got bogged down on soft ground in a tactical affair at Plumpton last time out, but previously to that ran a smart race when runner up in a Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham’s December meeting. I think this race will suit him and he can run well.
