3.15pm Doncaster - Sporting John (Each Way)
It is fair to say that SPORTING JOHN (EW) is a total enigma, but could easily be the best handicapped horse running this weekend, so gets one more chance from me to show his old spark in Doncaster’s Grimthorpe Chase.
He’s gone off the boil, but he is a former Grade 1 winner over fences who is running off 141 in a Handicap Chase. The Philip Hobbs team are in much better form than they have been for some time, and if the application of first-time blinkers by the Minehead handler have the desired effect, he could easily bounce back to form.
His jumping went to pieces in a big field in a frenetically run contest at Ascot last time out but should find things more suitable in this smaller field on a galloping track. Aidan Coleman takes the ride on this individual who has a touch of class.
2.10pm Newbury - Whatsupwithyou (Each Way)
Over at Newbury, WHATSUPWITHYOU (EW) can go well for the in-form Ben Pauling team. The 9-year-old has been struggling on soft ground lately, and despite that, still ran with plenty of credit when fifth at Kempton last December.
Eased to a mark of 119, he is now 1lb lower than winning at Uttoxeter last season. Quicker conditions will be much more in his favour here, and can easily get involved in the shake-up with Luca Morgan doing the steering.
1.50pm Kelso - Deere Mark (Each Way)
Kelso’s Morebattle Hurdle card has some quality racing with terrific prize money on offer, and I like the chances of the Sam Thomas trained DEERE MARK (EW) in the second race at 1.50pm.
The 6-year-old was pulled-out on the morning of the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury three weeks ago on the account of the ground being too quick, but should have underfoot conditions much more to his liking here.
He arrives on a hat-trick, and slotting in nicely off a mark of 125 he looks to have major claims. He should be suited by the big field with cut in the ground, and he can get in the mix at healthy odds.
2.25pm Kelso - Colonel Harry (Each Way)
COLONEL HARRY (EW) looks the each-way play in the Grade 2 Premier Novices Hurdle. It’s been a great season numerically, and can add to the tally here.
Colonel Harry is a winner of two of his four starts over Hurdles, he bolted up at Newcastle last time out, and previously to that had finished fourth to Tahmuras in the Tolworth. That in itself is smart form, and he was only just under two-lengths behind Nemean Lion who he re-opposes today. Going left-handed could be key and I like his chances with trip and ground promising to suit.
