Ed Quigley: Weekend Watch - Saturday 19th November

Ed casts his eye over the action at Ascot & Haydock on Saturday

This weekend really is a treat for Racing fans. Probably the most exciting horse in training, Constitution Hill, is back. We have this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and defending Betfair Chase champion A Plus Tard ready to rock and roll, as well as a whole host of classy individuals on display. Obviously, for Antepost Armchair readers, we will be hoping for a big run from MIGHT I at Haydock, and PROTEKTORAT at the same venue, in his attempt to topple the aforementioned A Plus Tard. First time out in ground that is pretty testing could be time to topple the Cheveley park maestro, as Protektorat loves soft ground, and Dan Skelton has said his representative will be “tuned to the minute.”

As for other weekend interests, I am keeping the powder fairly dry but will look forward to some terrific spectacles, but KILTEALY BRIGGS looks a bit overpriced at Ascot. The presence of Arkle winner Edwardstone trying to defy an official mark of 161 makes for fascinating viewing, but in receipt of 17lb, Kiltealy Briggs represents the red-hot Jamie Snowden team, and the eight-year-old could easily outrun his odds. The drop-down in trip is a concern, but he arrives in good form and will probably be ridden forcefully in the hands of Adrian Heskin.

Kiltealy Briggs looks overpriced in receipt of plenty of weight from Edwardstone

At 25/1 a £10 win bet would return £260

I think the value play at Haydock could be in the lucky last, with the mud-loving LORD DU MESNIL. The Richard Hobson-trained nine-year-old not only enjoys soft ground but has a cracking record at Haydock, with three wins at the track on his CV. Purely from a handicapping perspective, off a mark of 146, he is now 3lb lower than when last in the winners enclosure - with that win coming at this venue. He can go well here.

Elsewhere, I will be keeping my eyes on my King George ante-post tip Hitman, who will run at Haydock or Ascot, and fingers crossed, can put in a bold show before heading off to the Sunbury venue on December 26, where I really looking forward to seeing him tackle three miles for the first time.
