We have some terrific action to look forward to this weekend, as day three of Newmarket’s July Festival is upon us. The July Cup itself looks too tricky to call, but there is plenty of value to be had elsewhere.
The Superlative Stakes (3.15) has attracted an unexposed quintet, with my preference for the Brian Meehan trained ISAAC SHELBY. I like the manner in which the son of Night Of Thunder powered clear to land a Newbury maiden on debut back in May in really taking fashion over an extended 6f. Stepping up 7f looks the perfect move for him and I think he has major claims with Sean Levey in the saddle.
The Bunbury Cup has attracted a field of 20, and there are many in the line-up holding live claims. STAR OF ORION got no luck in running in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, but eased to a mark of 96 shouldn’t be discounted here. He has never convinced over 1m, and a strongly run 7f on quick ground will suit. He may well need the gaps to open at the right time once again here, but he has previous winning form on the July course and looks primed for a big run for the in-form Ralph Beckett team.
Over on the Knavesmire, it’s hard to look past the chances of WINTER POWER. The four-year-old filly has an outrageously good record at York, a track she has made her own - including when winning this last year, and going on to land Group 1 glory at this venue by winning the Nunthorpe Stakes. She is one of the fastest sprinters around, and the flying five furlongs on fast ground at York really suit her running style. Back into Listed company she could prove too classy for her rivals.
Back to Listed company, Winter Power is fancied to shine
At 5/2 a £10 bet would return £35

Ascot’s good looking card is ultra competitive, and in the 3.00, I would roll the dice once more with the Archie Watson trained TABDEED. The seven-year-old fluffed the start and then got badly hampered in the Wokingham, so you can put a line through that effort. Eased to a mark of 100, this previous course winner is in the hunt from an each-way perspective.
